About the Author

Monica McGoldrick, LCSW, PhD (h.c.), Director of the Multicultural Family Institute in Highland Park, New Jersey, is also Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey–Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. She was Visiting Professor at Fordham University School of Social Service for 12 years. Ms. McGoldrick received her MSW in 1969 from Smith College School for Social Work, which later granted her one of the few honorary doctorates awarded by the school in its 60-year history. Other awards include the American Family Therapy Academy's award for Distinguished Contribution to Family Therapy Theory and Practice. An internationally known author, she speaks widely on culture, class, gender, the family life cycle, and other topics. Joe Giordano, MSW, is a family therapist in private practice in Bronxville, New York. He was formerly Director of the American Jewish Committee's Center on Ethnicity, Behavior, and Communications, where he conducted pioneering studies on the psychological nature of ethnic identity and group behavior. The author of widely published articles on ethnicity, family, and the media, he served as host of Proud to Be Me, a PBS television program, and as producer of the audio series Growing Up in America. This is a very helpful book when learning how to counsel people from different cultural backgrounds. This book gives detailed information about the traditional customs​ and views of each of the cultures, as well as providing information about suggested ways of counseling. Very good book for all counselors.

This is a great informative book. It does not generalize all Asian, Latin or Middle Eastern cultures.It breaks it down into individual countries. It also gives a cultural history of the target group and their assimilation into American society. It is the only one I know of that discusses European Americans as part of diversity. My only disappointment is that there is no discussion of South America. Overall this is an excellent book recommended to me by one of my Psychology professors.

Good condition

This is an excellent book. I read the older edition for a diversity course as part of my doctoral psychology education. I sought out the book as I develop a training program for interns to enrich our discussions on ethnicity. I personally love reading it on my own for enjoyment also and I'm not even a family therapist.

Decided not to sell this book back when class was over because there was so much great, practical, and surprising information regarding different ethnic groups. I see this as a great resource to aide in the therapeutic relationship.

Pricey, but a great resource to have in the helping professions.

These profiles are so great. Well written, insightful, on subjects both silly and profound, with lots of insight into human nature. The one about Hemingway makes him seem like a pompous, self-inflated horse's butt and a stone alcoholic. I believe it was accurate. The one about Ricky Jay, the magician's magician, is great, too. A genius. I can't wait to read the rest. This book is good to keep around, so I always have something fun to read. These are not butt-kiss profiles, like the ones you find in Vanity Fair. These are honest, objective, and true. Real journalism. Rare these days. Buy this book. You won't be sorry.

If you are a fan of biographies but are intimidated by 1,000-page tomes, Life Stories is a great choice. Some say the New Yorker invented the "profile," and though it does seem the magazine was the first to call its biographical pieces by that name (amazing, considering how ubiquitous the term is today), editor David Remnick is quick to assert that they hardly invented the style. What they have done for decades is find the most interesting people and have the best writers provide illumination. Nearly every profile here is profound and nearly every one of them is short enough to read in a single (long) sitting. And while it's a treat to learn intimate details of some of the most famous people of the 20th century, it's the profiles of the lesser-known people that shine: from Joseph Mitchell's encounter with an aging churchman with a penchant for baking to the story of the Chudnovsky brothers, Russian emigres who built a supercomputer in their apartment from salvaged parts. Fantastic reading from start to finish.

As with any anthology, there are articles/stories of great interest, some that are OK and some you stop reading after a few paragraphs.The majority of the stories were, of course, very well written.Reaching back to bios such as that of Henry Luce was worth the read while anything that Roger Angel writes I look forward to with anticipation. While I had read the on Steve Blass some time ago, it still was enjoyable on its reread.Now that I think about it there were few stories I failed to dig into!

this collection is worth the price of admission to two profiles--johnny carson and marlon brando. thoughtfully assembled, this "greatest hits" made me not feel so bad when i threw out old, favorite issues of the new yorker, only to discover some of those much beloved profiles in this collection. yet for some space reasons, many of the multipart profiles (i.e.the schizophrenic "slyvia frumpkin" or the psychiatrist "aaron") don't have a home here. my plea, as a reader, is that the new yorker should annually produce these anthologies. oh yeah, the cover is absolutely brilliant.

This is a collection of prime examples of the long gone "profile" piece in The New Yorker magazine. They just don't write 'em like this anymore!Choose Truman Capote's profile of Marlon Brando, or Lillian Ross' profile of Ernest Hemingway, or any of the 20-some other profiles in this book. You will read some of the best writing about some of the most exciting people in 20th Century history.Is there a second volume in the works? I hope so!

Hemingway, Baryishnikov, and Henry Luce are the subjects of some of my favorite celebrity profiles in this wonderful book. But topping my list is "Man Goes to See a Doctor", the awesome Adam Gopnik's sweet and funny rendering of his shrink. Here's a snippet: "Your problems remind me of" - and here he named one of the heroes of the New York School. "Fortunately, you suffer from neither impotence nor alcoholism. This is in your favor." Highly recommended!

This is a non-fiction anthology about the rich, famous, celebrities, etc. I enjoy reading this book so much that it hard to put down and get to work on my own stuff. However, it's great entertainment and reading how the other half lives; This book satisfied my curiosity about the rich and famous.

Bit dated, here and there - but still fascinating...
