I bought this off BookBub on a lark. It was so compelling I read it in one four-hour block. I don't often read Christian fiction because it usually feels preachy, but this one managed not to. The non-faith doubts are raw, rubber-on-pavement questions and the answers gentle but gritty. I liked that. Ms. Blackstone has a beautiful writing style, with creative word pictures and non-stop action. She does an excellent job thinking through Casey's actions as she tries to stay undetected while running from the law yet still creates enough leads for the relentless private detective to track her down. (The plot reminded me a great deal of the old Harrison Ford movie, The Fugitive.) At first, I had to suspend my disbelief that Casey would really flee a crime she didn't commit. The logic seemed weak. But as more of her past is revealed, her reasons end up being very solid. Then I thought the way Casey happened upon a secondary crime (a kidnapped and held woman) midway through the book felt very coincidental, but on reflection, that particular type of crime is usually stumbled upon by happenstance. So my only remaining complaint was that a shotgun put a single bullet through someone's head, but then I remembered they can fire slugs. So I debunked all my own criticisms. I have nothing left but praise!
I couldn’t put this book down. The suspense made it hard to breathe! This is the story of a girl on the run from corrupt cops trying to kill her, while being tracked by a former soldier with PTSD. If that weren’t enough, there’s a subplot about a kidnapped teenager! This is an emotional book. The writer did a good job of describing the soldier’s life with PTSD. (I really wish our soldiers could get the help they deserve.) His struggle with depression and suicidal thoughts were all too real. Blackstock also weaved in how unexpected deaths affect family members for years to come. I like how she used both lead characters to examine hard questions about God’s intervention on the earth. This is a clean book—no profanity or intimacy at all.I really recommend this book. I took one star off for the scam of making readers buy two more books to find out how the story ends.
Oh my goodness! This is a book that is hard to put down. It is a race of good against evil and is frustrating to see evil in a place where there should only be good, safety and justice.Casey Cox discovered the body of her friend, Brent, at his house and tried to revive him but it was too late. She knew that "they" had gotten to him because he was trying to help her. Casey found the body of her father, a cop, hanging from a ceiling fan when she was twelve. The Shreveport police declared it a suicide but she knew that it wasn't. It was murder but no one would listen to her. Brent was a journalist and was investigating to help prove that her father was indeed killed. He had called her that day to say that he was discovered some things that he wanted to talk to her about but someone had gotten to him first. Unfortunately, her footprints and DNA are on over the crime scene so she knows that she will be next. She takes some money and a duffel bag and catches a bus out of town. The police are looking for her and know that she has left town and what direction she is heading.Dylan Roberts and Brent were friends growing up together. Dylan was a criminal investigator while in the military and is now out trying to find a job. He was turned down by the Shreveport Police Department because he has PTSD. After the memorial service, Brent's parents ask Dylan to try to find Casey and bring her back to stand trial for Brent's murder. He would be working along with the police so he agrees to do it to bring Brent's killer to justice. But Casey is a smart girl and evades the police for a long time. As Dylan digs into her life, he finds a different picture of the person that knew Brent from the one that the police has portrayed her to be. What a path this takes us on as Casey, now known as Grace, has to go on to stay out of the grips of the cops. This is one exciting ride! I have already started reading the next book, If I'm Found. Terri Blackstock is a great writer that knows how to write suspense with a message of faith running through it.
I've never done this before, and I read dozens of books each year. I stopped about halfway through and decided to write the review before I finished it. I've read other books by Terri Blackstock, many actually. I've enjoyed them all, some better than others. I'd just finished a book by a different author and couldn't review it because I was conflicted about how I thought about it. I decided to start this one. As I read and began to know the characters, and get sucked into the story, there came a point where I was hooked. I sighed and knew I would not watch any of my favorite tv shows, or work on my hobbies because I was strapped in and ready to ride this one in. In addition, her way of weaving faith into the story is brilliant. I marked some of the pages because I can use her examples for myself when I share my faith. I appreciate Terry for her balance of grace and truth, and a great mix of suspense, and characters with heart. She makes you really feel what the characters are going through. "Keep em comin" Terry, and I will keep reading. She's my favorite fictional author and her books are always different and fresh!
