I read this novel from cover to cover and it has no plot!Okay - it's a reference book - and it could be a much better one. Sometimes the author of a book like this that gets "updated" and re-published every year "forgets" that not every user of Quickbooks is an accountant. Quickbooks for Dummies - does a better job of helping the novice understand how to set up their accounts and why â€“ but it may not go as deep as you need to with Quickbooks. This is more of a "how" book, without explaining the why sometimes. It would really, really be helpful if Intuit would get off the kick that this is a full-featured business bookkeeping program that demands an accountant review. First - it's not full featured. Second - some small businesses (which is what Quickbooks was designed for and is good for don't use accountants. Having said that, this would be better if every page didn't have a "ask your accountant about that" phrase. Okay - I'll jump off the soap box, but - fair warning - I will keep it handy.This book will guide you through most tasks related to using Quickbooks Pro 2012. You could probably use is just as easily for earlier and subsequent versions. It explains the "how to" and will give you some guidance that you wouldn't find on your own. But for the new user - the person just starting their business and making an investment in accounting software - it doesn't offer some much needed guidance. For example, many users of this product are sole proprietors - they had an idea, backed their idea with some money and hard work and started a real business. Unfortunately, they don't have the foggiest idea how to account for their investment in their own company and this book doesn't help at all! Oops - there goes that fifth star. I believe it would be a far better book, or an opportunity for some entrepreneur to write a far better book, if it had a little more "why" included with specific "how to" that every company faces - like how to account for owner equity. Frankly, the software application itself has links to the online QB community that go much further in helping to understand the "why" than this book does.It also lacks some specifics on "how", even when the user understands "why". For example, nothing in this book explains how to track different methods of depreciation for different classes of fixed assets - something almost every business does. In fact, the application itself is significantly lacking in this important aspect of business, but the "Official Guide" could explain that and offer a solution for working through it.The "bottom line" is that it's not as good as it could or should be, but it's probably the very best of about four decent reference books that I glanced through. If you're needing a guide on "how to" specifically for Quickbooks Pro - this is the best there is and I recommend it in spite of the noted shortcomings.

This book is very helpful about doing the basics step by step. You can pretty much setup quickbooks for your business from this book. However, I bought it to specifically help me understand a few issues that it never addresses. There's no information on entering owner's equity, setting up liability accounts (other than payroll which it goes into great detail but most everyone has other liabilities) and there's no talk on handling personal expenses that may creep into your business (we all know it does happen). And as a non-accountant person, I'd like some info on when to use the General Journal entry. If it's in here I can't find it. Really disappointed.

We've been using QuickBooks for our retail business for while now and only recently upgraded to the latest version. This book helped us find and learn how to use features in the software that we never used before (and actually didn't even know existed). We're actually feeling a bit more confident that our office staff is using QuickBooks correctly. This is my new go to resource for quick books!

(As one working at understanding the writing of Teilhard de Chardon it makes me yearn for the manifestation of the Omega point.)The arguments in this book also helped understand and place Schoenbergs 12 tone system in the historical development of music. And the book finishes with very sensible arguments about being open to new music without worrying about its place in the canon. And the new understanding this book has given me will help me more thoroughly appreciate the wealth of recordings in the new Bach 333 set.

For several years the distinguished author has been a musical critic for the prestigious New York Times. He also sports a Ph.D in music and has recorded classical music. Out of that rich experience he wrote a series of 2011 articles in his newspaper on the top ten composers of all time! Out of that series this book published in 2018 has been developed and presented to the public. I found it fascinating! Even for me who is not a musician I found the biographical and analytic studies of the various composers to be worth reading about. He begins with Monteverdi who was key in developing Italian opera moving on to such giants of the art as Bach, Handel, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Chopin, Verdi, Wagner, Bartok, Schoenberg, Stravinsky Liszt, Puccini and several others. The book is a joy to read and would be a great gift for a music lover of any age. Music is the international language and this book is a great homage to its power and emotion in the human psyche. Highly recommended!

Since my introduction to classical music listening to my older teenage sister practicing her piano lessons, I've enjoyed classical music, although I have no inclination to learn an instrument or sing. I've listened to classical music while studying, at the NY Philharmonic during a 2-year subscription many years ago, and while reading, eating and doing chores around the house. While I am now familiar with most of the often played repertory of the 18th, 19th and early 20thy century composers , I had little knowledge of the development of that music, until I read Indispensable Composers. Although it has its share of lingo, which is beyond me, Its given me great pleasure. I actually read the book next to my computer and listened to many of the works mentioned in the book on You Tube as I read it. It has enriched my pleasure in listening to music and introduced me to 20th century composers such as Bartok, whose compositions I now enjoy.

This book is an excellent review of the great classical composers. For each of the seventeen composers covered in the book, the author provides a quick biography and a listing of their most important and memorable music (from his perspective and of course his perspective is important). Most of the composers that he selects are, of course, the indispensable composers. But, I'm sure readers will disagree with some selections and wonder why other composers were not selected. But the main ones are here: Bach, Mozart, Handel, Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Wagner, Brahms, and Stravinsky. There are others that usually aren't included but it is good that he included them, e.g. Verdi and Puccini. I won't quibble about the missed composers or the ones that he included that resulted in me scratching my head, only to write, that his opinion on why they were included was useful. If you enjoy classical music, like I do, I highly recommend this book.

I followed the author comments in new York Times for some time.He is an educated critic and this book is easy to read.I give the book only 4 stars because I think there is a most appropriateway to suggest to the reader the importance of his selection then "indispensable".

Good read with insightful musical comments. I particularly liked the 2 YouTube links. As a lapsed violinist I missed any discussion of the two towering works, the Beethoven and Brahms Concertos. Also Iâ€™ve never warmed to 12 tone music and would have left Schoenberg off my list. Your college years were mine and my musical appreciation was similarly expanded by The Beatles.
