Plum Island, by Nelson DeMille

Amazon.com Review

Nelson DeMille's narrative engine is one of the best in the business, and it chugs away in grand style in this story of buried treasure and biological warfare on a tiny spit of land off Long Island. As told by a wry, wounded New York City detective who is drafted to explore a couple of murders, Plum Island is a rich pudding of flavorful (if familiar) ingredients, including a ferocious storm at sea. Other DeMille epics in paperback include By the Rivers of Babylon, The General's Daughter, The Gold Coast, Spencerville, and Word of Honor.

Not nearly as good as the reviews would lead you to believe -- unless you really enjoy silly juvenile behavior. As usual, DeMille puts together a good story and he knows how to write -- but he absolutely ruins the book with the obnoxious character of John Corey. I've read a number of DeMille's more recent books and expected (and received) Corey's typical excessive smartass comments -- well, I knew what I was getting into, so that's not even a critique. This one, however, goes even farther over the top. There was a heavy emphasis on Corey's sex drive (Neanderthal competition for women that I've never witnessed by any man anywhere in my entire life), to the point I was just disgusted with it, and his behavior (e.g., deliberately vandalizing things with an axe because he was angry) would get him fired from any police agency anywhere.

I love the John Corey books. this isn't the best of them but any John Corey is worth the read. And this has an interesting mystery at the center of it. When two scientists at a highly restricted germ warfare lab on Plumb Island are killed, John Corey is the only person who doesn't buy the theory that they were trying to sell their latest discovery to the highest bidder and that he should keep it hushed for the sake of national security. But, this turns out to be incorrect and the real reason is a straight up cop-shop mystery with the patented Corey humor pushing the story along. Like a lot of the Corey books, this isn't action packed, it's a deductive mystery with some memorable characters and that's fine with me.

Plum Island is the third of this author's books I have now read and I am hooked. i'm working on number four now and enjoying every minute. He's a great writer with a mix of knowledge of investigative work, inter-agency conflicts (all true), sarcasm and great humor. the self-deprecating humor of his John Corey and other lead characters, is a true skill. clearly, Mr. DeMille does extensive research on his topics and locations. i actually did some fact checking on things I hadn't known before and found that he took real facts, local lore, geography and procedures, mixing them into a carefully crafted story that rings true and holds my interest. That is not always easy because I am an extensive reader and have experience in the fields of which he writes. But he has hooked me and I am ordering more of his work. This author has made it to my personal Hit Parade.

This was my second Nelson DeMille book. I previously read The Gold Coast, which I loved. But Plum Island was only okay.I have two reservations about it. First, this time out I didn't find the sarcastic, jokey narrative funny. The Gold Coast's narrator-protagonist was also kind of like that, but it was more restrained and not distracting there (in fact, it was a pleasure in that book). Here, it was over the top. I found John Corey to be obnoxious at times and simply not funny. (Example: I didn't know that haughtily referring to yourself in the French -- "Moi" -- is a real hoot; must be because John Corey does it all the time).Second, it just wasn't that strong as mysteries go. It unfolds in a very linear way, no twists or turns, really. Corey uncovers clues and reaches big conclusions way too easily, and by about 55-60% into the book, you can pretty much see where it's going.I give it three stars because it has its occasional charms. It wins a few points for a good setting which is easy to envision, and frankly a good hook that dominates the first 100 pages or so -- the story had a promising set up at the get go. But it was only okay after that. I don't expect to read any more John Corey novels, but I probably will try The Gold Coast's sequel, The Gate House.

I've read many of Nelson Demille's novels and decided to go back to this first John Corey story recently. It is a book I believe that I read at some point in the past, probably shortly after it was first published in 1997.John Corey is one of those characters that can be found in many stories of this type - irreverent and smart-alecky, a rule breaker who somehow still manages to cleverly solve the case even while pissing off his boss and half of the people around him. Oh, and not to forget he has an eye for the ladies and manages to partner up with an attractive female at some point in each story, often leading to some degree of romantics along the way.So it is formulaic in that sense, but enjoyable as these stories usually are. The setting in this case is Long Island, bringing in some of the wealth that inhabits the area, as well as a secret U.S. Government lab residing on, you guessed it, Plum Island. Plus - buried treasure! (The skull and crossbones on the book cover should be a giveaway to that aspect of the story). Altogether there are plenty of story elements to keep it interesting, and DeMille writes well and it is an easy read with enough suspense to keep the reader motivated to the end.

First let me say that I started the Corey series with Lions Game and continued as each new book was published. Then I bought this one..the first in the series. If I was a new reader of the Corey series, I am not sure I would have continued the series. The story was ok and character development was fine, except for the female detective..she seemed rather shallow. But what really annoyed me was Coreys lack of ability to answer a question without being sarcastic or making a joke. It got tiresome halfway through the book. Also the idea that boat drivers can yell at one another, in a hurricane, and be heard. As a boater I can tell you that would not be so unless you were side by side, which was not the case in this book.

Review

"At first, this is a book about friendship with a touch of magical realism. As it progresses, it becomes a deeper meditation about a parent’s clinical depression from a child’s point of view. Well crafted and unique. Recommended.--School Library Journal"Middle-schooler Gideon Quinton wasn't thrilled about moving with his family across the U.S. to nowhere Nevada right at the start of summer break. When he arrives to his new neighborhood, he notices there's a girl next door about his age ... and she takes him on (un-Quinton-like) wild, Hobbit-like adventures. For the reader, especially any adult reader, this story is heartbreaking." -- Booklist Magazine

There is a much good to be said of The Astonishing Maybe. For instance, it is well written. It is also a thoughtful story that probably reflects reality for far more children than we would care to imagine. It illustrates important life lessons and values in a way that are so clearly understood, for any age. Yet, at the end, I felt...unsettled. Sort of sad. Maybe resilience is all many of us can hope for in this world. But that would sell the book short on the precious reminder of the power of compassion and loyalty. As you can see, I do have mixed emotions, but I see this is the author creating a powerful story. Life isn't always rainbows and lollypops, but finding and being a true friend makes the journey a little less lonely. I do recommend this book and give Shaunta Grimes kudos for writing such a brave and poignant book.

Just got my copy today so I will update when I'm done, but I'm already hooked on Gideon and his angst at moving, and I so relate! Can't wait to keep reading and share this book! 💖

I don't usually read teen books, but I bought this one as part of a Writer's Conference. I read it as I can't buy a book and not read it. It is a well thought out and deeply emotional book about two children learning about adventure and how grown ups aren't exactly perfect. It's an excellent choice for your teen to read.

Gideon was not happy about relocating from the Jersey Shore to the Nevada desert. He thought this move would equal disaster, but then he saw a girl, his age, wearing a cape and roller skating. He was immediately drawn to her. She was vivacious, adventurous, and imaginative. Essentially, the opposite of him, but Gideon soon discovered that Roona was dealing with a lot of grown up issues.Like Gideon, I was immediately drawn to Roona. I saw an early description for this book that described it was Pippi Longstocking meets My Girl, and I thought that was a pretty fair comparison. Roona came across larger than life, and she had a way of convincing Gideon to do things, which he normally wouldn't do. But, she was also generous and loving, and most of her schemes were for the benefit of others, not herself.I thought Gideon was enamored with Roona, because she seemed so free, whereas Gideon lived under the very overprotective watch of his mother, being normal and Quinton-ish. I could totally understand this pre-teen wanting to explore beyond his boundaries, and who better to go on Tookish adventures with, then someone with an alter ego called Super Roo.But, this wasn't the only way Gideon grew over the summer. I watched him become a better friend and a better brother. He learned to appreciate his family a little more, while still trying to do some un-Quinton-like things, such as getting involved in Roona's life, when she really needed some support. He also had to makes some big decisions about keeping secrets, and he learned the difference between when it's ok to keep a secret for your friend, and when you need to ask an adult for help.Though Roona came across as a free spirit, she actually had to worry about many grownup things due to her absent father and depressed mother. I thought the author handled these issues, and other that arose, beautifully, and reading them from Gideon's perspective softened the blow a little too. I won't lie, watching the demise of Super Roo was tough for me. It's always heartbreaking to see someone so young have to deal with these issues, but what's more heartbreaking is that I know there are non-fictional kids with similar struggles. I can only hope they are lucky enough to have a friend like Gideon, who worked so hard to try and resurrect Super Roo.Overall: A charming and moving story of friendship and finding those people you know you can count on in your time of need, which tugged on my heartstrings and put a smile on my face.

This story gives a clear example of a pre-teen in a no-win situation work through possible solutions.

Roona and Gideon make an awesome duo. I could not put this book down! I read it in an hour. It was like gulping down an ice cold glass of (not blue or red) lemonade while in the scorching Nevada Desert. Watch out for the baked goods and the other twists and turns of this amazing page turner.

A fun read for kids and the adults in their life who will enjoy the clever descriptions that accompanyeach beautifully drawn picture of a fruit that corresponds to a developing baby.

I stumbled upon this book rather randomly when looking for board books for my 2-year-old and though it looked very cute - I’m not disappointed! This book is wonderful for her to follow along as we talk about the size of the “tiny baby” growing in mommy. I am definitely putting this on my list of great expectant-parent gifts.Highly recommend!

Andrew Tobin is a genius! This book is the perfect gift for someone who is expecting but almost an even better gift for a youngster who is getting a new brother/sister! The board book allows for maximum durability and the anecdotes are both amusing and educational.Could not recommend this book any higher. It is superb!Well Done Mr. Tobin!

Great gift for friends and family! The watercolors are gorgeous. My kids love the illustrations.

cute & funny even if you’re not pregnant

Love this book! The illustrations are beautiful. It is great for kids and makes a great gift to expecting parents.

The best thing about this series of books is probably the pictures of almost every move. If you are familiar with Pole Dancing they are helpful however the descriptions can be confusing especially for someone new to Pole. The Author seems to have been making notes and never fully edited the descriptions. With some better descriptions, editing and grammar this series wouldn't be that bad. However if you have never Poled before, this is not the way to start. Find a reputable studio where there is an instructor who can teach you safely.

While the author tries to explain things in a fun and easy way -all the technical information is left out of this _and the explanations proceed the pictures with just one picture per move. I don't believe this book is for anyone: in that it doesn't have enough safety and technical information in it to help beginner to intermediate dancers_ and people that can actually do these moves, without the technical instruction provided, this book will be useless to them. The only place I give it is the author is very positive and easy-to-read though this doesn't translate well to higher levels of pole dancing when you get seriously injure yourself or learn the moves completely incorrectly (and making it harder for yourself)_ which at the very least cost people to be turned off by a pole dancing

This book offers some good information, if you already have some knowledge of intermediate pole. I don't agree with the order of the lessons though and there are some inconsistencies and writing errors. For example, I don't feel the lesson on shoulder mounts should be prior to learning handstands and climbs. The straddle carousel lesson should include a note that split grip can be hard on the wrists. Some wording (such as the use of "You should then" and "Now," is repetitive, and therefore makes it hard to follow. The drawings are extremely helpful and I do wish there were more of them. Also, without having read the beginner book, I don't know if there is a glossary or break down of terms, which would have been helpful as not all moves have the same names in each region. I do appreciate that the author mentions the need to work on ab strength in order to get some of the moves.*This digital copy was received in exchange for a review. All opinions are my own.*

Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World's Worst Dog, by John Grogan

From Publishers Weekly

Labrador retrievers are generally considered even-tempered, calm and reliable;and then there's Marley, the subject of this delightful tribute to one Lab who doesn't fit the mold. Grogan, a columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer, and his wife, Jenny, were newly married and living in West Palm Beach when they decided that owning a dog would give them a foretaste of the parenthood they anticipated. Marley was a sweet, affectionate puppy who grew into a lovably naughty, hyperactive dog. With a light touch, the author details how Marley was kicked out of obedience school after humiliating his instructor (whom Grogan calls Miss Dominatrix) and swallowed an 18-karat solid gold necklace (Grogan describes his gross but hilarious "recovery operation"). With the arrival of children in the family, Marley became so incorrigible that Jenny, stressed out by a new baby, ordered her husband to get rid of him; she eventually recovered her equilibrium and relented. Grogan's chronicle of the adventures parents and children (eventually three) enjoyed with the overly energetic but endearing dog is delivered with great humor. Dog lovers will love this account of Grogan's much loved canine. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

From Booklist

"Oh my. I don't think I've ever seen anything so cute in my life." Thus author Grogan's wife sealed their fate when they "just went to look" at a litter of Labrador retriever puppies and ended up picking out Marley. Maybe their first clue should have been that the breeder had discounted the price on their puppy, or when they saw his father charging out of the woods covered in mud with a crazed but joyous look in his eye. Despite these portents, Marley entered their lives, and nothing was ever the same again. Between careening through screen doors and swallowing everything that would fit in his mouth, Marley also managed to comfort these two when they miscarried their first child. Although Marley got kicked out of obedience training after he dragged the instructor across the parking lot and terrorized his pet sitter, he also landed a minor role in a straight-to-video movie. Marley, incorrigible though he was, had inserted himself into the author's life in a way no normal dog could. A warm, friendly -memoir-with-dog. Nancy BentCopyright © American Library Association. This is a book for dog lovers, and for those who have been loved by a dog. The Grogans may not have been the best dog trainers in the world, and they may have made a common mistake of buying their dog from a backyard breeder, but what they did right was they loved their dog, and stayed devoted to him through his whole life, from puppyhood to old age. In this throwaway society, where many people consider pets to be "disposable", to be dumped at the pound when they are no longer a cute puppy, or when they start misbehaving, the Grogans did what all responsible pet owners should do. They stuck with Marley, they tried to learn, they tried obedience classes, they worked with their vet to help control Marley's issues, and they actually considered their dog a part of their family, through good and through bad. Marley was one lucky dog, to have been owned by a family who loved him for who he was, and loved him for his whole life. Every dog should be so lucky. It really made me remember all the beautiful amazing times with my beloved dog who passed away, and it made me sad that she is gone.I hope my review has been helpful to you. It encourages me to continue writing and updating my reviews. Please leave a comment if you have any questions, I will be more than happy to answer if I can be of help.

This is not such a horrible book, as many would like you to believe. Sure, it isn't a jaw-dropping epic or an amazingly sappy story, but it is a good read that you can enjoy.I think I feel bad for the people who criticize John and his wife for how they treated Marley. First, it wasn't that horrible. In fact, Marley had it pretty good. A lot of people are failing to place the story in its proper time frame. Marley was born in the early 1990s--a time when positive training, counter conditioning, and clicker training were just beginning to take root and was not easily available to the public. Most people never even heard of such things---even very good vets. Dominance and Alpha theory were the rule of the day, and the choker chain was a common accessory for most dogs. I recall my own dog wearing one of those things, though I was a timid person who hated them and never actually used them.True, that didn't excuse several things that Mr. Grogan thought or did. He wasn't the best person in the world...but then again, he didn't hide it either. I give him brownie points for that. Most people try to make themselves seem better than they were, but the author laid himself out pretty honestly. How many people would write down that they actually found a sadistic pleasure in choking their dog during training class? He even put it in a negative light, showing that he was well aware that this was not a good thing. But anyone who has had a problem dog understands this feeling. It happens--frustration, anger, uncertainty can build up like that.A lot of people condemn the title of the book: Life and Love with the world's Worst dog. Hyperbole is often frowned upon, true, however---he addresses this at the end. Again, he brings to light something anyone with a problem of any kind knows: that feeling of being the only one. He even foreshadowed this when he described his first dog training class. All the other dogs were well mannered and lined up exactly as they should, while Marley ran rampant and drooled over everything. For years, he never met or knew of any dogs that behaved like Marley: until he wrote Marley's life down. Then he realized that he wasn't alone, that he didn't have the *worst* dog. While he jokingly refers to the Bad Dog Club and all its members, he also writes a very telling line: "My new friends in the Secret Brotherhood of Dysfunctional Dog Owners." It is a subtle admittance that he now realizes that, yes, he was not the best of owners and he failed on many accounts--some of which he had no way of really dealing with at the time.John Grogan did everything he could with the tools he had. I dislike his seeking the cheapest, shadiest dog training school (parking lot?) but I honestly don't recall dog training classes being anything more than in someone's house or rented community center at the time (I was a teen then, and didn't look so I can't say for sure).I'm divided on his ill-timed vacation, too. I mean, there was no way he could have predicted what would happen. Even the vet didn't know when or where, only that it was a possibility. He made sure to put Marley in the best care with the people that loved him and wanted the best for him, and when he came back: the dog was mostly fine! Most likely, it was the excitement of seeing his family again that did it, but who knows? Having lost a few pets of my own over my lifetime, and knowing that our own lifes go on, I can't really condemn him for it or blast him for such a horrible choice because...he really couldn't have known. It was very possible that Marley would have gone on for another couple of years, or would have passed at any moment. What stands out in this book is that John Grogan truly loved Marley. His family really cared for him, and they did the best they could. I think the reason why this book is so popular is because it resonates with the average person: the ones who don't or didn't know that they could have helped their dog overcome their phobia, could have taught him to properly direct his energy--that it was possible to have the "good dog" he wanted with a lot of hard work. At the time, there was no "hard work" only sighs of "too bad." I think he knows better now, at least I hope he does. By the time he wrote this book and published it, all the information he could have used began to be more widely available. Perhaps he regrets what he didn't know, or maybe he uses these things with his new dog. This isn't really a book about what not to do. It is more a book about what used to be. In that respect, it is actually pretty accurate.

This is just the kind of hilarious, fun book I like to read, but because I saw the movie, I almost never read books AFTER I’ve seen the movie. For me it’s the other way around: I read the book and see the movie, usually to see how much better the book was. It’s been a long time since I saw the movie, so I gave the book a chance, and I’m glad I did—the humor and endless comedy was a blast. Marley destroyed countless pieces of furniture and screen doors. He routinely ate things like parts of their stereo equipment and once, a gold necklace that was a gift from author John Grogen to his wife, Jenny. Grogen then reports in hilarious detail being on poop patrol in his attempt to rescue the expensive necklace from Marley’s prodigious defecation offerings to their backyard.Everything about the book is funny or touching. Even the birth of their first child was told in hysterical detail.Marley got kicked out of obedience school the first time for being too incorrigible. When they went back many months later, he did manage to pass—and he quickly snatched his diploma from John’s hands and ate it.If you’ve ever shared your life with a dog (even cats like to destroy plants, especially if they’re hanging and they can pounce on them from any surface and yank them out of the wall so you come home to dirt and plant shreddings spattered across your carpeting. They also like to topple books from shelves and sit on your keyboard while you’re on deadline for work), you’ll identify with the funny stories of how much work animal companions can be, and how much we miss them when they’re gone. If you live in a place that doesn’t allow animals, you’ll also feel a little better about how simple and unencumbered your life is, but you’ll feel a wistful sense of loss, too.

What a wonderful book. We had a Lab/Shepherd mix for 15 years who was the image of St Shaun, but his heart was just like Marley’s. Thirty years after his death, I still se little clones running around Lake Placid. He was a busy boy. Seeing his 3rd, 4th and 5th generation descendants make me miss him still. Marley has brought back all that love like nothing else I’ve ever read.

I havent seen the movie and i like books about animals so I picked this book up. It was a quick and enjoyable read. Marley was a lot of trouble and i can relate as we have had some trying times with very badly behaved cats. Although he was a lot of trouble, Marley was also very loveable. Hats off to Grogan for sticking with Marley and loving him through the pain.
