Welcome to Cockleberry Bay, the sweetest little Devonshire village, that nothing is what it seemsI will not lie, I totally picked this book solely because it is set in Devon, and seen as I'm really homesick at the moment, books based in the UK are making me feel happy. But what I didn't expect was the rollercoaster of emotion that I would experience or that I was at chapter 43 before I blinked an eye! So maybe this book should come with a warning! This book is so addictive that you will literally lose 3 hours of your life, and you won't care! The whole book revolves around Rosa Larkin, a girl who grew up in the foster system, and has suddenly been left a shop in Cockleberry Bay! After the bumpy start to her life, and losing her charity shop job, she left London with the blessing of Josh, her roommate/BFF with drunk benefits and her dog Hot, and headed down to the sunny skies of Devon. But this Cockleberry Bay could give Midsummer Murders a run for its money! And nothing and no one is what it seems! Now I'm not going to share any more of the story with you, as you really need to go out and read it, because it is SO freaking good! And I totally admit, I didn't see the ending coming. This is the first Nicola May book I have ever read, but it certainly will NOT be the last! The writing is fantastic, the way the author made the characters come to life just blew me away! I truly haven't felt this much empathy for a character in such a long time, that it shook me to the core a little! Now to sum up The Corner Shop in Cockleberry Bay it is fantastic, gripping, no holds barred amazing 5-star book! And one I recommend everyone read and enjoy.

When Londoner Rosa is down on her luck with jobs and just about everything but her roommate Josh, she receives an incredible notice. An unknown benefactor has left her a corner shop in a small town on the ocean in a quaint village. She decides she can sell it at use the money for living expenses, however finds out the condition that she can't sell the property. What started out as a passing interest turns into a life changing experience for Rosa. With much help from Josh she moves to Cockleberry Bay and goes about cleaning up the store and apartment above it. She doesn't proceed without her share of mistakes, but she finally opens a pet shop that is food and accessories for dogs and cats. Through ups and downs her little "sausage" dog, Hot, keeps her company. In the end she has found a place to call home, with lovely surprises along the way.Much of the dialog and terms used in the book are unfamiliar to this US reader, but in spite of that, the meanings became clear as I continued reading. It was like a mini vacation to a small seaside village for me! The author didn't hold anything back, so if you are put off by bad language or casual sex, this wouldn't be the book for you. However if you can read about that in the context of creating realistic characters, you will enjoy the book. The intricate plot and exquisite ending make it all worthwhile.

Although a very different kettle of fish (to use a seaside metaphor) from the cozy mysteries I usually read (there were several mysteries to be solved within the story, but none of them was a murder), I found this novel to be very intriguing. Those who have struggled with the addictions of family members, or who have themselves managed to escape the tendency to numb out pain with sex or alcohol, may find many aspects of the story very disturbing. There is a lot of sexual commentary in the book, but only perhaps two times does it descend into actual sexual description (which I personally find very distasteful; sex is something best done, not described, in my viewpoint.) All of the characters are very intriguing and three-dimensional, and the book is extremely well-written and edited. The aspects of the book which bothered me -- misuse of alcohol, casual sex, sexual description -- are the reason I would say 3 stars only at some points; the aspects that I found intriguing -- characterization, mystery, and writing -- deserve the 4 star awards.

4.5 Lovely Stars🌟🌟🌟🌟.5”Love is friendship set on fire...”This book was an absolute pleasure to read... One of the absolute best parts of being a book blogger/reviewer is the exposure you get to so many amazing authors you wouldn’t otherwise be exposed to... this book is a perfect example of that.... I’ve never read anything by Nicola may, But I can guarantee I will take every opportunity offered to read more books from her.... I like my romance with a touch of humor, a lot of fabulous characters, and a beautiful setting.... this book had all that and the added bonus of some mystery....Rosa has had a tough life, so when she is offered the opportunity to move to Cockleberry Bay and reopen a corner shop... she thinks this might be a perfect opportunity to get her life straight.... The catch... she can’t sell the shop she needs to give it to somebody who is worthy (when it is time) and also she has no idea who has gifted this to her.... Rosa really had a complete transformation throughout this book, it was so lovely to see... she started out with such thick walls around her, you wondered if there was any way she would be happy in a town where everybody knew everything about you.... and she grew into such a charming person with so many wonderful and Corky friends.... she also has the most adorable dog Hot🐾There is also romance in this book... but you aren’t quite sure who the love interest is until towards the end.... I had my clear favorite, so I don’t really want to describe them because I probably will give it away.... just know there is not a love triangle, and you really want Rosa to make a certain choice (well at least I did).... as I mentioned above there is also some mystery in this book... who gave the corner shop to Rosa? Who was involved in the hit and run accident? And what happened to that necklace?Strongly recommend to fans of Romance with some humor, wonderful quirky characters, and a touch of mystery...*** thank you so much to Nicola May and Rachel at Rachel‘s Random Resources for a copy of this wonderful book ***

Fisherman’s Wharf From Crab Traps to Tourist Traps: Maritime History Along the Waterfront BOUNDARIES: Beach St., Jefferson St., Grant Ave., Aquatic Park DISTANCE: 3 miles DIFFICULTY: Easy PARKING: Off-street parking is available at Anchorage Square, corner of Leavenworth and Beach Sts. Most street parking is metered 7 days a week. On side streets south of Bay St. you might find unmetered street parking, limited to 2 hours for nonresidents (on Sunday you can park for an unlimited time in these zones). PUBLIC TRANSIT: Powell–Mason cable car; F streetcar; 47 Muni bus Most San Franciscans roll their eyes at the thought of walking through Fisherman’s Wharf, but this is because they equate it with mass-produced T-shirts, overpriced waffle cones, and tacky tourist schlock. And while all of this does exist along the quay, you’ll also find a rich history of Italian and Chinese immigrants, a still-vibrant fishing trade, fascinating museums, and some unexpected surprises lurking beneath the surface. From penny arcades to submarines to barking seals―not to mention the gorgeous views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz―the area is not without merit if you’re willing to look for the worthwhile sights. Further, to understand San Francisco is to understand how Fisherman’s Wharf came to be in the first place. So while street hawkers pitching soup in a bread bowl and wax museums lend an air of inauthenticity, there’s actually quite a bit of genuine San Francisco hiding in plain sight here. Walk Description Start at Longshoremen’s Hall, a homely but historical structure at the corner of Mason and Beach Streets. It houses the headquarters of the International Longshoremen’s and Warehousemen’s Union. Bodies outlined on the sidewalk suggest that this corner was a crime scene, but these figures are tributes to the striking longshoremen who were shot by police in the general strike of 1934. The riot and shootings took place not here but at the corner of Mission and Steuart Streets, where the Coast Seamen’s Union kept its offices. A significant historic event did take place in this building in January 1966, when the Trips Festival was held here. The three-day event, organized by Ken Kesey (who penned One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest), rock promoter Bill Graham, and others, ushered in the hippie era. Entertainment was provided by the Grateful Dead, Big Brother and the Holding Company, light shows, and a “stroboscopic trampolinist” who hopped up and down while a strobe light flickered on him. The real point of the festival was to drop acid, and some 6,000 people showed up to do just that. Take a look through the plate-glass windows and imagine the place full of wigged-out flower children. Turn right onto Beach Street, take a left on Stockton Street, and cross the Embarcadero to enter Pier 39. This open-air shopping center is about as touristy as it gets, with businesses obviously preying upon impulsive shoppers. One attraction that is heads above, however, is the Smithsonian affiliate Aquarium of the Bay, which features a walk-through fish tunnel and touch pools. If you’re not checking out marine life, then head straight to the San Francisco Carousel, a handcrafted classic, made in Italy. Horses and chariots rotate around a mechanical organ in the center, while hand-painted San Francisco scenes decorate the top. Rides cost $5. (Interestingly, when Pier 39 first opened, there was a diving pool where the carousel sits, and sometimes it was filled with Jell-O for various games.) When you reach the end of the pier, turn left to pay a visit to K Dock, where a small colony of raucous California sea lions overtook a row of boat docks in 1990. The colony quickly grew, and now as many as 1,000 barking sea lions compete for space on the docks on a winter’s day. In summer, most of them migrate to warmer waters to breed, but a few usually haul out here year-round. They’re rightly the biggest attraction on Pier 39. Exiting the pier, turn right onto the Embarcadero (which feeds into Jefferson Street), and walk two blocks until you see and smell Boudin Bakery. The modern building is nothing much to look at, but the company has been providing the city with sourdough bread since 1849, and some of its “mother dough” is said to have been carried over from the first batch, surviving in the fog-cooled air. Veer right onto Pier 45, and allow yourself to be drawn into the magical penny arcade Musée Mécanique, the undeniable hidden gem of Fisherman’s Wharf. For some, it’s the only excuse to venture into this part of town. It’s the private collection of the late Edward Galland Zelinsky, consisting of mechanical amusements and games, mostly from the early 20th century. Risqué mutoscope moving pictures (mostly of women showing their ankles), player pianos, and old-fashioned black-and-white photo booths will easily suck the quarters out of your pockets. Save a few coins for the real showstoppers―automated displays of carnivals and circuses, toothpick Ferris wheels, and even a Chinese opium den with a dragon that peeps out from behind a curtain. Be sure to pump some quarters into Laffin’ Sal to keep her howling. Her belly laughs are infectious or terrifying, depending on your sensibilities. Some of the one-of-a-kind machines here are fine works of folk art. Exit through the back doors onto the waterfront, where the sight of a submarine and a Liberty-class ship from World War II will tell you you’re on the right track. The submarine is the USS Pampanito, which patrolled the Pacific during the latter half of the war. For 20 smackers, you can board the sub to see how uncomfortable life beneath the waves must have been, and to puzzle over the state-of-the art technology of a bygone era. The Liberty ship is the SS Jeremiah O’Brien, a cargo-carrying vessel that delivered supplies to Normandy on D-Day. Fully outfitted and in working order, it was used to shoot scenes from Titanic, among others. For an additional $20, you can climb aboard―we suggest heading straight for the engine room for an astonishing view of the ship’s awesome 2,700-horsepower, triple-expansion steam engine....

I lounged in my hammock and read this from cover to cover. In addition to choice walks of SF, you get a good idea of some of the history. Well written, and the tours look great. I'm relying on this as my itinerary, I hope it works out. There's always museums on a rainy day.

I've always loved SF. My grandmother grew up there. She left at age 20 after the 1906 earthquake. SF is a great city to walk in. This book breaks down pretty much the whole city into bite size walks which you could combine if so inclined. It gives history, out of the way places, and a lot of eating and drinking places to explore. Also, included are shopping ideas. At the beginning of each chapter it gives a distance and rates the walks from easy to strenuous to help you decide which one(s) you'd like to take.

Great book that combines points of interest with food hot spots and adds some great sidebars about cultural happenings on the walks. The one criticism I have is the maps for some walks would benefit from additional detail (more street names and more detail about hiking paths through parks). I've also spotted a couple of directional errors (the book says turn right, but really you should turn left) which are somewhat of an issue if you're relying on the book for directions and you're not a San Franciscan. These quibbles aside, this book is a must for anyone wanting to get a sense for the real San Francisco.

Great book. I love to walk and I did most of the walks in this book. My only recommendation would be to make it in a format that i could hold in my hand while walking, which is what I did, but it was awkward. A long thin ring-bound book would be perfect.

Loved all the ideas and Loved San Francisco period. So much to explore and so many places to go. I definitely recommend this book.

Interesting book with very helpful info - gave me an overview of the San Francisco area, helping me make the most of my time there. Found just a couple of errors, pointing me in the wrong direction in the Nob Hill section.

Useful

I bought this book to check out San Francisco attractions. It's not what I expected but if you're looking for step by step, turn by turn, street by street walking directions, this is the book for you!

Review

“[A] rare, ranging breed of narrative that manages to do all… It’s nothing short of important, possibly life-altering, reading for every living, breathing human being... In Pollan’s dexterous hands, we get the science, the history, the inspiration, ultimately the recipe. What feels like all of it. It doesn’t hurt that he also happens to be very funny.”--Boston Globe"Because of the power of his prose and his reasoning, Cooked may prove to be just as influential as Pollan’s seminal book, The Omnivore’s Dilemma… The results are fascinating, but the magic of Cooked lies not in its ability to unlock the secrets of slow-roasting a whole hog or brewing beer… No, what Pollan pulls off is even more impressive: He manages to illuminate the wealth of connections that stem from our DIY time in the kitchen.”--The Washington Post"As in The Omnivore’s Dilemma, Pollan is never less than delightful, full of curiosity, insight, and good humor. This is a book to be read, savored, and smudged with spatterings of olive oil, wine, butter, and the sulfuric streaks of chopped onion."—Outside“The book's surplus of fascinating tidbits—about everything from barbecue (which Pollan connects to ritual animal sacrifice) to the mysterious workings of bread yeast — makes it a feast for intellectual omnivores.” – Entertainment Weekly“Through cooking, Pollan argues, we clear a space, allowing ourselves not only to consider our sometimes troubled bond with nature but to reestablish our ties to one another, and to become makers instead of consumers. Cooked is a potently seductive invitation to discover—or rediscover—our most primal connection to the natural world.” – Bookforum"Spurred by a number of objectives—improving his family’s general health, connecting with his teenage son, and learning how people can reduce their dependence on corporations, among others—Pollan (The Omnivore’s Dilemma; In Defense of Food) came to the realization that he’d be able to accomplish all those goals and more if he spent more time in his kitchen. He began cooking. Divided into four chapters based on the four elements, Pollan eloquently explains how grilling with fire, braising (water), baking bread (air), and fermented foods (earth) have impacted our health and culture. ... Engaging and enlightening reading."—Publishers Weekly (starred review)“New York Times best-selling author Pollan (The Botany of Desire; The Omnivore’s Dilemma) delivers a thoughtful meditation on cooking that is both difficult to categorize and uniquely, inimitably his… Intensely focused yet wide ranging, beautifully written, thought provoking, and, yes, fun, Pollan’s latest is not to be missed by those interested in how, why, or what we cook and eat."—Library Journal (starred review)"Having described what's wrong with American food in his best-selling The Omnivore's Dilemma (2006), New York Times contributor Pollan delivers a more optimistic but equally fascinating account of how to do it right.... A delightful chronicle of the education of a cook who steps back frequently to extol the scientific and philosophical basis of this deeply satisfying human activity."—Kirkus (starred review)"Pollan’s newest treatise on how food reaches the world’s tables delves into the history of how humankind turns raw ingredients into palatable and nutritious food. To bring some sense of order to this vast subject, he resurrects classical categories of fire, water, air, and earth… Four recipes accompany the text, and an extensive bibliography offers much deeper exploration. Pollan’s peerless reputation as one of America’s most compelling expositors of food and human sustainability will boost demand."—Booklist (starred review)

It is a rare writer who can turn the mundane into the magnificent, but Pollan manages to do so. I picked the book up in the store and was caught by the story of the art (and it is) of whole pig barbecue in the "Fire" section so made the purchase. His divides the book into sections on Fire, Water, Air, and Earth and then proceeds to provide more detail in each than I would have thought possible. He has a unique ability to make some of the most trivial item into something of vital interest. Despite the fact that this arena is not high on my list of topics, it turned out to be a worthy read.

â€œI had a deeply unsettling moment when, after spending a couple years researching nutrition for my last book, In Defense of Food, I realized that the answer to the supposedly incredibly complicated question of what we should eat wasn’t so complicated after all, and in fact could be boiled down to just seven words:Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants. This was the bottom line, and it was satisfying to have found it, a piece of hard ground deep down at the bottom of the swamp of nutrition science: seven words of plain English, no biochemistry degree required. But it was also somewhat alarming, because my publisher was expecting a few thousand words more than that. Fortunately for both of us, I realized that the story of how simple a question as what to eat had ever gotten so complicated was one worth telling, and that became the focus of that book. The focus of this book is very different. It is much less about theory, history, and science than it is about our daily lives and practice. In this short, radically pared-down book, I unpack those seven words of advice into a comprehensive set of rules, or personal policies, designed to help you eat real food in moderation and, by doing so, substantially get off the Western diet. The rules are phrased in everyday language; I deliberately avoid the vocabulary of nutrition or biochemistry, though in most cases there is scientific research to back them up.”~ Michael Pollan from Food RulesMichael Pollan is the author of a number of New York Times best-selling books on nutrition (including In Defense of Food and The Omnivore’s Dilemma). He’s a longtime New York Times contributor and Professor of Journalism at Berkeley. In 2010, Time magazine named him one of the one hundred most influential people in the world. If you’re looking for a SUPER compact, witty look at the primary rules on how to eat well, this is it. I HIGHLY recommend you pick up a copy as I think it’s the page-for-page best guide on the basic fundamentals of nutrition. It’s a fun, witty, concise guide to eating well featuring 64 food rules structured around Pollan’s seven words of wisdom:Part 1 = Eat food.Part 2 = Mostly plants.Part 3 = Not too much.I'm excited to share some of favorite Big Ideas:1. Nutrition: 2 Facts - Everyone agrees on.2. Rule #1: Eat Food - Not edible foodlike substances.3. Low-Fat - Made us fat.4. Will Your Food Rot? - Good test.5. 66% - 80% - Not too much.Let’s have fun optimizing our food rules as we eat food... not too much... mostly plants!More goodness— including PhilosophersNotes on 300+ books in our *OPTIMIZE* membership program. If you follow only half of what Micheal says to do in this book, you will live a healthy lifestyle. I lost 83 pounds after following his advice,I went from 268 to 183 in 7 months, got off all medication and my blood work was perfect.

I have been a fan of Michael Pollan's ever since I read Botany of Desire. At the time, I thought he'd never top that book but as his curiosity and passion about food, our food delivery systems, and the fundamental importance of what we eat has increased, he has just gotten better and better. If you are already a Michael Pollan fan, you appreciate his meticulous attention to detail in his research and his lucid prose. I swear, this guy could take the most complicated subject on the planet and make it accessible to his readers. In Cooked, I think he has reached a new peak in his powers of synthesis and observation.Cooked is divided into four parts, analogous to the four elements described by the ancient Greeks: Fire, Water, Air and Earth. Of these, it was the section on Earth (fermentation) that really made me sit up and take notice. He brings up so many important points about how our Western diet fails us every day, making our lifespans shorter and our health more precarious. In its way, Cooked is as important a book about health and nutrition as Diet for a Small Planet was when it first appeared in the 1970s. This book will make you think, give you tools to improve your health, and explain how cooking a meal from scratch in your own kitchen becomes an act of rebellion. So worth your time and the purchase price.

If you're buying this enrich your knowledge of nutrition from scratch then yes, this book may be a good little nutrition pocket bible. If you're buying this book to help a family member who is down on their luck with losing weight or being healthy, then yes, give them this book. If you already have a firm handle on what you need to do to stay fit and healthy, then no, this book doesn't teach anything new. I like the format of the book and the presentation of subjects in a simplistic format to keep the book short, but don't expect to learn anything especially interesting.

Michael Pollan is a gifted writer, a UC Berkey Professor, and an oracle on food. This is his fourth book, an excellent addition. His first, The Omnivores' Dilema, introduces us to a new way of looking at our food and nutrition. NOT A DIET BOOK, but a book about us, our food and our history with it. Fascinating observations are presented without any agenda other than sharing the information. This writer was very influential in my education as a Chef and wording with food. What did I get from this author? Eat what your Grandmother ate. On Ethnic Foods: traditional foods in any culture that mom would have made are almost always okay.... Mothers don't knowingly feed their families bad food.....Stay away from "factory made food"!.....Shop the perimeter of the supermarket. Shop produce, go to dairy, then meat department and the to the checkout. Most everything in the center is factory made, and in a can, bag, or box.

I whipped through this book in two days and love author Becky Albertalli’s writing style. I am a fan of dialogue and witty banter is even better: you get that with this book. I just felt it was missing something. That something special that came with the experience of reading Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda.Note: ‘Leah on the Offbeat’ is a continuation of the Creekwood series; Simon being Creekwood #1. It can be read as a standalone – but then you wouldn’t really know the characters and I absolutely recommend reading Simon! That is a given.Leah is Simon’s best friend. Like Simon in Book #1, she has her own secret that is holding her back from being happy. She is sarcastic, snarky, and moody but you love her anyway because she is not malicious. She only stands in her own way.I will not go into the rest of the story, because you need to read it to experience it.It is hard to compete with all the awesomeness of Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda. But, I expected something new from this one and was a bit disappointed. It felt a bit rushed and lacking the care the first book had. I do still think its worth a read, especially if you loved Simon and want to see what some of the characters are up to. Just don’t expect to be blown away.

Of course this was amazing.I loved being in Leah’s head. I love her snark and sarcasm and RBF. I loved that we got so much Simon and Bram. I loved Leah’s mom.I loved the story and the ending and the Harry Potter references and the Doctor Who reference and the everything. There is not one thing about this that I didn’t love.

After loving the hell out of "Simon vs the Homosapien Agenda" and "The Upside of Unrequited" I couldn't wait to read "Leah on the Offbeat." As a matter of fact, since I had to get a hardcover copy of the new book, I upgraded my copies of Simon and Upside to hardcover, so the set would match on my shelf. (A little OCD, I know...) What a disappointment! It's not often I get to the last page of a book and feel so unsatisfied, and totally angry that I can't get those hours of my life back!***Spoilers Ahead***Leah was a rude, miserable, cynical, abrasive, sour-puss... who ultimately got everything she wanted, and still seemed only marginally happy about it. I'm shocked that the author chose to glorify and reward Leah's behavior. What a horrible message to give young readers.Leah helped break up Abby and Nick! Okay. I get that teenage romance rarely lasts past graduation. But making Abby suddenly become bi and fall for the most negative and moody girl on the planet? Seems pretty deus ex machina to me.The author's style and wit was consistent with her previous books. At least there was that! The story just wasn't good. I can't help but feel that a totally awesome story COULD HAVE BEEN told about Leah, had Albertalli taken a different path. Two things would have made a boatload of difference, in my humble opinion: First, anyone but Abby! That was just a bad choice. She could have ended up with Nora and that would have been more believable. This was the perfect opportunity to develop a new character. Second, Leah really needed an attitude adjustment! I wanted to like her, but I hated her, and hated that she got what she wanted in the end without any self-improvement. Ya gotta give in order to get; at least a little something. I keep thinking of Ally Sheedy's transformation in "The Breakfast Club." Not the physical make-over, but the change in attitude; coming out of her shell near the end of the movie. Something like that.Unfortunately, if Albertalli writes another Creekwood book, I don't think I'll be in much of a rush to go get a copy.

I have to admit that after reading a few mixed/negative Amazon reviews, I was nervous to read this novel. I loved "Simon vs. Homo Sapiens Agenda" and didn't want to be disappointed by a subpar sequel. My overall verdict is that "Leah on the Offbeat" is an enjoyable read, but not quite as emotionally c ompelling as its predecessor due to poor plotting.First, let me focus on what "Leah on the Offbeat" does well. By telling the story from Leah's perspective, author Becky Albertalli draws attention to issues glossed over in "Simon," like bisexuality, racism, and socioeconomic status. Some readers may be uncomfortable with the change in emphasis, but I thought they were handled well for the most part. Nearly all of the characters from "Simon" make appearances in the sequel and there's plenty of cuteness to go around. Simon and his boyfriend are still madly in love a year after Simon's involuntary outing. At times, they come across as the most stable characters in the story. To me, the main problem with "Leah Off the Beat" is that it has an uneven plot. While "Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda" was rife with suspense that drove much of that story (who is Blue? Will Martin out Simon? How will people react?), "Leah" lacks the same sort of unity. What we get instead are a handful of interrelated character conflicts about college application drama and prom night that don't quite pack the same emotional punch. The events leading up to prom night feel more like an episode of Glee than a poignant emotional roller coaster. And though there's a happy ending, the abrupt closing scene and epilogue don't give readers the chance to see how most of the other characters handle the immediate aftermath. The epilogue just tells us what happened. And that's disappointing. (It's especially stark compared to "Simon," where Blue's identity is revealed three chapters before the end of the book, leaving plenty of time to wrap up loose ends). In all, fans of "Simon vs. the Homo Sapien Agenda" will probably find "Leah on the Offbeat" to be an enjoyable sequel, even with its imperfections.
