John Feinstein does a fine job of supporting his thesis – that the Ryder Cup is the most intense and emotional and the best major event in golf. I fully agree with him and, if anything, I think Mr. Feinstein understates the status of the Ryder Cup – I find it to be the most compelling event in all of sports, not just golf. In addition to intensity and emotion, the Ryder Cup combines the elements of match play, teamwork and a wonderful tradition with exciting finishes. I have been to the last four Ryder Cups, so I know much of what he is writing about, but I was very impressed with his research that enables him to present many anecdotes that had not been told before and to answer some questions about why certain decisions were made or not made.The book is about the 2016 Ryder Cup, but the author traces its roots back to the first Ryder Cup in 1927 and before. He then goes into more detail about each competition after the Ryder Cup became competitive in 1983. Almost all of the author’s opinions are logical and well-supported, but his criticism of the Official World Golf Ranking as a “flawed system” seems oversimplified. He criticizes the use of players' records over a two-year period without mentioning that the older tournaments carry less weight than current tournaments. The system might be imperfect, but I think using two years makes sense. For example, although Rory McIlroy only finished #58 in the 2016/2017 FedEx Cup standings, he is #6 in the OWGR based mostly on what he did in 2016. Presumably Mr. Feinstein thinks McIlroy should be ranked closer to #58 than #6, but I still consider him a top 10 golfer.This book has more than enough positive elements to merit a rating of 5, but there are also enough proof-reading issues that cause me to lower that rating to 4. It serves little purpose to list the proof-reading errors in this review, so I am showing nine examples in the first comment to the review.

Read a few of John Feinstein's books. Do enjoy the fact that he is such a golf fan and was great to read one about the Ryder Cup, one of it not my favorite golf events to watch. Always nice to read about some of the stuff that goes behind the scenes of an event like that in the team room or off camera for sure. Was also nice to read about some of the history behind each of the captain's stories in how they got there including some of the adversity and struggles they had to overcome in their lives too. One small critique was that there was repetition of certain facts that were mentioned in the very beginning that were then woven back into the book. Easily could have been intentional and not a big deal whatsoever. Just repetitive in nature.

I live near Hazeltine and attended the full Ryder Cup week (including practice rounds). I heard good reviews and an interview with Feinstein, so I was excited to read this. I won't say I was disappointed, but I wasn't wowed either. Some good stories, but most of them were reported at the time.My biggest issue is obvious mistakes, albeit on tangential factual matters. The first page refers to Hazeltine being in southwest Minnesota (it's not; it's in a suburb of Minneapolis, which is in east-central Minnesota). There's reference to I-12 (instead of Highway 212). There's reference to water lining the left side of hole 16 (there's water, but it's a pond to the front and left of the green, not lining the hole). These minor errors, which I get aren't obvious or material to the main story, make me wonder what other, bigger errors there are. It's the sort of thing that careful authors and editors should catch. It ends up distracting from the overall story.

A must read for anyone interested in Ryder Cup golf, and in particular the 2016 event. Feinstein does a great job showing how this event is so different from any of the Majors from the players perspective. The book is full of interesting anecdotes, insights into the players' thinking, etc. Unfortunately, it is also crammed full of trivial, uninteresting information that makes it seem like Feinstein is trying to prove how much detailed research he did. And more disappointing, one of the key elements of the 2016 Ryder Cup was the effort known as the "Ryder Cup Committee" - aka the Task Force - which seemed to be such a crucial element in the planning and subsequent success of the American team, not to mention laying the groundwork for subsequent Ryder Cup teams, was given pretty short shrift in light of its importance. Nonetheless, this is a good book worth reading.

A good book as usual from Feinstein but I thought I would get a little more inside information. Now, I read everything I can find online about The Ryder Cup, but most of this is a rehash of the "Committee" being formed after Michelson piped in at the previous Ryder Cup press conference. A nice read but I had hoped for more revelations and behind the scenes info.

If you are a fan of golf then do yourself a favor and read this book. You will not be disappointed. It offers critical history, meaningful insights with the players and essential details of the 2016 Ryder Cup. It left me with greater appreciation for the Ryder Cup, many of the players and certainly for the two captains. Well done Mr. Feinstein, well done.

I have read several of Feinstein's books and have really enjoyed all of them...with the exception of this one. There is some new and insightful commentary, but there is a ton of rehashed materials from previous books and even repetitive stuff within this book. The actual account of the 2016 Ryder Cup is fair at best, especially if you watched it live, but maybe that's par for the course when trying to write about it. I would say skip this one, as I was only really "moved" emotionally once or twice throughout the read.

This is the first John Feinstein book I have read and I must say I am a fan. I was at the 2016 Ryder Cup and this book brought such a rich of backstory. This was the first book in a long time where i stayed up until 2 AM because i could not put it down.

Jim Gerrish is an independent grazing lands consultant providing service to farmers and ranchers on both private and public lands across the USA and internationally. If you are serious about implementing year-round grazing, and eliminating or greatly reducing the amount of hay you feed your cattle this is the best book there is. The author is a retired researcher from one of the University of Missouri's research farms who also farmed his own farm in northern Missouri before moving to Idaho to farm after he retired from his research job. So this isn't just some university professor who is writing about this and has never farmed. The author farmed and put his ideas into practice not only on the university farm but also on his own personal farm. What I like best about this book is how the author tells us about his own experiences, both good and bad, as he transitioned from a conventional hay feeding cattleman to one that goes through an entire year without feeding hay. Most of this book is written about the experiences the author had in northern Missouri, but he also spends some time talking about cattle ranching in the arid west, and how it is vastly different than the midwest. I bought this book after reading Management-Intensive Grazing, also by Jim Gerrish. I highly recommend getting both books, as you must implement management-intensive (rotational) grazing in order to go year-round with no hay.

I got in over my head with this book. I realize I need to do more research with management intensive grazing, because I'm missing stuff in this book. I'm really excited at the level of information, I just need to get a little smarter to use it.

Lots of good info. if you follow his advice your cattle operation should be a positive balance sheet.

New perspective on year-round Grazing. I wish we got more winter rain in Central Florida.The suggested annuals just did not come up due to lack of rain.

I really loved this. REALLY loved it. I am an inveterate manga reader, particularly in the BL genre, and this is probably the most impressed I have ever been with a manga from that genre. There is still so much more to learn and find out about the characters, too. Most of what I'd like to say has been stated before, but I *really* want to credit the team at SuBLime for doing such a fantastic job.When it comes to English releases in the yaoi genre, it's unfortunate to say but in the past, with major licencer DMG/June's "quantity over quality" approach, the bar was not set very high with regard to the quality of translation and localization you'd get. I should say that it was very inconsistent, and during the "boom period" for yaoi, the quality would vary wildly between releases with that particular company.It is extremely refreshing to see that SuBLime puts so much into the translation work for each title, clearly aiming for a consistent standard of quality that they all but never fail to meet. I think we should all be very grateful to them for raising the bar when it comes to what defines a truly "professional release" in the yaoi industry.

My friend of mine recommended this and I decided to give it a chance. I've always been a person who loves romance. Let me say, this is a really good manga so far. I loved the therapist/patient relationship and it has my interest in mysophobia overall. Since this is my first, I'm not fully sure how to review but I do love where this is going. I like the art....and there is some major sexual tension already.

There are so many great things about this manga that I can't even put into words. Not only is this a fantastic yaoi with a couple that doesn't seem overly forced, but the main character is someone I can really relate to. He has a mental disorder which causes him to need to wash his hands constantly as well as many other things, which is something I struggle with. You'll have to read the manga to find out how that plays into the relationship. I was considering continuing reading it online after I got to the end of this volume, but stopped myself because I like to read things when I can hold them. I look forward to the next volume, which the author noted would have more risque scenes in it because this first one was mostly setting up the emotions and connections with the two main characters. This was definitely a good read and this series will remain my favorite for a long time I'm sure.

I decided to try this series out because it kept popping up as an option on my Kindle. I wasn't disappointed in the first book, it was quite fascinating, especially to see how one would write physical love scenes involving a man who is all but terrified of germs. I like how the author writes the two characters as they do play well off one another. I read the second volume almost the minute I finished the first because I wanted to see where the characters went. The first book, as the author notes, does start off slow for people who are only interested in the whole sex thing, but the idea behind the story is decent enough that it could make it without the sex, at least in my opinion.I will mention this, though. The fourth book is Kindlized and will be available soon, but the third is not. I don't know why, but if you are someone who can't do the paperback books and want to read this series then possibly wait till the third is offered in Kindle form before starting so you don't get caught up and not able to finish.

The first volume of Ten Count takes its time introducing main protagonists Shirotani and Kurose, allowing for a much more realistic depiction of a budding romance.Author AND illustrator Rihito Takarai has created a world that is very easy to invest yourself in as you watch the story unfold between two shy, troubled men.This Boys' Love story is surprisingly lacking in the love department; though I appreciated the decision to go sweet before sexy. Don't worry, later volumes will heat up but the story so far is strong enough to not have to rely on any eroticism.It is also exciting to see characters with real life mental illnesses in this type of medium, as well as see them treated with respect.Ten Count is one of the best produced manga that I've read in awhile. Definitely recommend if you're looking for a sweet yaoi story that focuses on character development and trust rather than a cosmic attraction.I will say this. Don't make the same mistake I did and be sure to have Vol. 2 on hand because Vol. 1 ends on a cliffhanger.

One of the best yaoi series I've read! The characters are well developed as the series progresses, and the plot is interesting. The dialog doesn't feel stiff, gratuitous, or repetitive. Each volume left me on the edge of my seat ready for more.One note - the series does involve mental illness and not quite rape but definitely some forceful situations, so if this bothers you, be warned.

I am in love with BL and I heard and seen this manga so many times over the years I just never thought about buying it but dannnng what a miss out! I love it so much!! Really hot and steamy read that will leave your face red.I wasn't expecting to see so much Yaoi but yay!! Lol beautiful art work the story is sweet and the characters are so dang hot!! A wonderful buy if you love Yaoi and a perfect add to your collection ;)

I am in love with this love story! And i cam relate too! I dont have as severe OCD as he does but mine is comorbid with touch aversion due to Apspergers Syndrome. I remember the first time someone taaught me about germs and how they are microspopic little bugs that are everywhere. I ran out of the classroom crying amd trying to pull my hair out because i thought bugs lived everwhere and i was a walking ecosystem of grossness. Thankfully a friend interveined and taught me that ecosystems were beautiful. *Shrug* My favorite scene though, is when he should have flinched but didnt. I almost was angry when it happened, mostly in fear for for the guy.

These are not only good design principles. They are a guide to how to interact in many social and organizational situations. Next time you are at a party or in a business meeting, look to see who is being excluded and what that means about the group dynamics. Look at who you exclude in your daily life and ask why.One of the best parts of this books is the stories of designers who have used various disabilities as a way to transform design. An example, imagine being a gamer who does not have use of their hands, and who cannot use a game controller. How would that change how you play games. How would it change the games you design?The story of the design of US fighter cockpits is telling. Back in the 1940 as jets were being introduced they were designed to fit the average pilot. How many of us are average on all dimensions? None of us. So a set of controls designed for the average suited no one. The results was a lot of accidents, many fatal. The cockpits were later redesigned to be adjustable so that each pilot could fit the cockpit to their own size and preferences.I will be getting copies for all three of my kids (all of whom work in design fields) and expect to reread this book several times.

Da Ponte's Memoirs are a worthy, if eccentric, addition to the NYRB catalog, but the NYRB provides almost no help in situating it. This translation first appeared, I believe, in 1929 and has been available in recent years from both Dover and Da Capo. One, (or was it both?), carried an excellent preface by the distinguished scholar of the Renaissance, Thomas Bergin. NYRB does not republish Bergin. It does republish the original 1929 introduction (by Arthur Livingston, once a teacher of Italian at Columbia) but with no hint of its provenance and, so far as I can discern, no mention of the date (the biblio page gives you a hint when it mentions a "renewal copyright" dated 1957). There is also an LC entry identifying "Livingston, Arthur, 1883-" but I doubt very much that Livingston was still alive when NYRB published in 2000. There is a preface by the distinguished music-scholar Charles Rosen, but it is beneath him: a slapdash affair that does little aside from assuring us that Italian olive oil is now available everywhere in America.Aside from these matters of production - the text itself is absorbing and instructive if you understand what you are getting. Da Ponte's only real claim to fame is, of course, that he is the librettist of Mozart's three great comic operas. Da Ponte cheerily declares that Mozart was the greatest composer of his time - perhaps the greatest ever - yet he gives this greatest of all composers perhaps a half dozen pages out of the entire 472-page text, less than any of a dozen other drifters and dreamers or down-market impresarios whom he met along the way.Rather than reading it as a work of music criticism, you can take it as a loose-jointed adventure story, in the tradition of Casanova (Da Ponte claims him as a friend) or Benvenuto Cellini. A perhaps more interesting comparison would be to Stendhal's "Charterhouse of Parma": readers who are scandalized that Da Ponte gives such short shrift to Mozart will recall that Stendhal's hero trekked all unknowing through the Battle of Waterloo. I suppose it is just possible that Stendhal read Da Ponte: I have no idea whether he did in fact. But it doesn't matter; the comparison adds a gratifying resonance anyway.Moreover, even if this book is not remotely useful as direct criticism of Mozart, I think it does cast the great libretti in a new light: you come to understand the schemers and seducers of the Mozart operas were not a mere nonce creation: they accompanied Da Ponte throughout the whole of his long and rumbustious life. "I trusted them and they betrayed me..." would be a pretty good title for the whole. You can certainly tire of his preening, his score-settling his tale-telling. Indeed you come pretty quickly to realize that not 100 percent of it can possibly true. How much, then? 80 percent? 50? 20? Of course I have no idea: maybe 50 will do as a guess. But I don't think that matters either. Recall what Goethe said about Livy: yes, they are just stories, but they are good stories. At the end, I think you can give Da Ponte credit for his most (nearly) disinterested passion: his desire to spread Italian culture to the Anglo-Saxon world. In this light, we can greet him on his own terms: se non e vero, e ben trovato.Four stars for the book, one for the presentation. Compromise on three.

The intrigues of Italian life in the late 1700's rival the intrigues of a Mozart opera. What a tale! The scullduggery is endless-and shameless-and makes for compulsive reading.

It's nice to have a translation to check when you're reading the original in Italian!

Everything fine

I trawled my way through this book as I usually like to start what I finish, but, my, it was hard going. The first half particularly is basically a lot of score settling which comes across as being so irrelevant especially now two centuries later. Half the time, my mind wandered and I just found the whole thing difficult to follow. Da Ponte seems full of self-pity and perhaps a justified sense of victimhood. Anyone would think he was a failure!

The best thing about this book is the preface by Charles Rosen. The rest it hugely disappointing. It is amazing how a poet can be so non-descriptive! How can any writer has been friends with both Mozart and Casanova and yet have nothing to say about them? One gets no sense of what life was like during the end of the 18th century at all. Even Da Ponte's own thoughts and motives do not come across. All that is left are petty political games at an assortment of different opera houses. Da Ponte's story is less amusing than the description of a single flirtation in the truly interesting and picaresque memoirs of his friend Casanova.
