This activity book is amazing! I got the book for my four-year-old grandson because I noticed that he really had no clue as to how to use scissors effectively. I had never worked with the Kumon books before, and I was really impressed with the colorful pictures and the way the book progresses slowly yet steadily in the level of difficulty. This helps develop the child's scissors confidence and control, and it helps the child gradually train and strengthen the muscles used to manipulate scissors. At first the child makes multiple short straight cuts, eventually progressing to longer straight cuts to curves, spirals, and finally to outlines of objects and animals.At first my grandson really struggled to make the cuts and couldn't manage holding the scissors and the paper at the same time. For the first ten or so activities my job was to hold the paper for him so that he could focus on manipulating the scissors. He needed lots of coaching and encouragement, and he would get frustrated, but he was so excited about making his own toys and presents for family members and decorations for parties, that he kept at it. He loved the results of the first two projects, cutting the whiskers for a dog and a cat, so much that he slept with them both during naps and at night.. Somehow he also got the idea that I should cut out the outlines of the animals so he could tape them onto chopsticks to make puppets. So each project had a "child part" and a "grandma part". Today's projects had the child cutting out the outlines of the objects and animals. I simply handed my grandson the child's portion of the pages, and he went and got the scissors and did them all himself and finished the whole book. It is the first time he has ever finished an entire activity book, and he was so excited about that. I signed his certificate of completion and he very proudly showed it off to Daddy when Daddy came to take him home. And my grandson took home four more puppets that he had made himself! And he asked to do more scissors projects!The most impressive results from this activity book, though, are not about just scissors skills or even about being better prepared for kindergarten. These projects progressed at a rate that let him be successful even when he felt challenged. They developed his confidence and got him excited about making things himself and adding his own creative innovations. They inspired creative play. They encouraged generosity since he had lots of projects to give away as gifts. Through this scissors skills book, my grandson has discovered a love of learning and an enthusiasm for craft-style projects that will probably be life-long. Plus, he had a whole lot of fun with Grandma! That's a lot of value from one activity book.I had also purchased the Melissa & Doug Scissor Skills Activity Pad for my grandson, but it was too advanced for him until now. He completed the first of the 20 activities today, and with his new-found enthusiasm for scissors activities, he will probably finish the entire activity pad this week. After that, I'm going back to Kumon books. Nothing else compares!In closing, I want to make one really important point. It is crucial to have good children's blunt-tip scissors for these projects. We had already experimented with two different pairs of less expensive children's scissors,before breaking down and buying Fiskars 5 Inch Classic Blunt Tip Kids Scissors, Color Received May Vary. The Fiskars were such a huge improvement that I ended going back and getting a second pair for me, so that I could work side by side with my grandson so he could imitate me. The Fiskars are far more comfortable to use and their ergonomic shape gently guides the child's hand into the proper position. And they have large enough handles that I can use them quite comfortably for these kinds of projects.

My little girl loves this! I bought her some child friendly scissors and gave her this with it for Easter. It's so adorable but she was four years old when she got it and struggled a little bit with the exercises unless we were right there helping her. I took the advice listed in the book that said the most important thing was allowing your child to enjoy cutting even if they didn't do the exercises. ( i'm sure i am paraphrasing that incorrectly) She ended up just enjoying cutting each paper into little pieces. I ended giving her an empty formula can with the lid and she would keep all of her scraps in there. Worked out really well and she loves this

The kiddo loves these! I was told by his preschool teacher that he needed to work on his cutting and tried some printable worksheets with different lines and shapes to cut, but he was bored with these and cutting practice turned into a chore. I was so happy. When I stumbled across this line of books. This particular one really captured my 5 year old's attention and he now begs to do his "cutting homework" he does a couple pages everyday and his cutting has significantly improved. I like how it progresses in difficulty- gives my son the right amount of a challenge without being frustrating. Overall, it would highly recommend to parents, teachers and care givers! Cutting practice is often overlooked by parents when preparing their kiddos for school- don't make the same mistake I did! I felt quite silly having focused all my attention on learning the alphabet, name writing, numbers, shapes etc. and having my child not know how to hold a pair of scissors lol Don't beat yourself up if you're like me though , kids learn fast!

BEST. BOOK. EVER. My son is almost three and could cut paper all day long with this book. The activities are sooo cute, challenging, but definitely doable. I hang them up in our house when he's done because he's so proud! Like my review for the Let's Sticker & Paste book, I plan on buying this book over and over because I don't think he will ever get tired of the activities! I would like to add that after trying other cutting practice books, that I love these best because the pages are small enough to handle and don't flop all over the place when children are trying to cut. The pages are also very sturdy!

My son (3.75) started with the Kumon "My First Book of Cutting" and loved it, so I bought this one. This book is much easier than that one, and at first appears boring. But we found it actually as interesting (sometimes more interesting!) because you can create toys / shapes that are fun to play with but not difficult to cut out, such as the sheep and butterfly cages. "My First Book of Cutting" ultimately moves to very complex shapes and repetitive, challenging cutting patterns that my son wanted to skip because they were frustrating, but this one keeps it fairly basic. It's also easier on the parents because it offers more instruction and because cutting the worksheet from the book is much easier (in "My First Book of Cutting", the worksheet needs to be cut very close to the binding).

I homeschooled my children and now have grandchildren. This is a good basic cutting book but be ready for the size to be about half a page instead of a full page sized work book. Just another cutting book to throw away when they are done. I have yet to find a work book that I can say is totally WORTH the money.

The "Tao Te Ching" (roughly "The Classic of the Way and Virtue") was written by a shadowy figure now known as Lao-tzu, "the Old Master." His writings outline a way of being in which the practitioner ceases to exert his or her will over the world, simply "going with the flow" of things as they naturally arise. Lao-tzu himself seems to have done quite a good job of this, effacing himself so thoroughly that we no longer know even his real name, but his text, in its quiet way, has endured for thousands of years.Red Pine has been a sensitive translator of a great many spiritual classics from the Chinese and Indian traditions, but with this "Tao" he outdoes himself. He created a new recension of the text based on recently-discovered scrolls, and his translation is founded on this work. Let us be clear: editing the text in this manner is a process in which all translators of ancient works must to some extent take part. The best textual critics look at the whole scope of the work, take in as many variations as possible, and then select the bit of text that seems most well-attested or most in line with the intent of the author. It does not mean the translator merely looks for variants that support his beliefs or agenda, although (lamentably) this sometimes happens. Thankfully, Red Pine does not do this. He has clearly engaged deeply with the text, and he makes his choices based on a reflective understanding of Lao-tzu's philosophy.After textual reconstruction, of course, comes the even more complex act of translating the text into another language. Many translators play free with the text to some degree; they insert ideas, explanations, and other tidbits they feel clarify or "communicate" the text. Red Pine has by necessity made some such choices at the stage of recension, but there such tinkering all but stops. His English version is spare--not elliptical, but neither embellished--and hews extremely close to his Chinese text. It can hardly be emphasized enough that Red Pine has brought the text into English about as directly as seems possible.If the translation alone were printed in a booklet and distributed, it would be a gift. But in this edition Red Pine has given us much more. The book itself is attractively designed: a pleasant size; text clear and readable. Each page includes Red Pine's Chinese text alongside the English translation, which is extremely useful if you happen to read Chinese and quite pretty even if you don't. Finally, each chapter is accompanied by extracts from several commentaries. The selection of writers covers numerous traditions and centuries of Chinese thought, and can help readers absorb a difficult verse, or perhaps find their own insights. There is also a comment from Red Pine, sometimes with a short thought on the chapter, or giving his rationale for choosing a particular textual variant. Each chapter is presented on facing pages, with commentary never running onto the next verso. This allows the commentaries to inform and stimulate without becoming exhausting or pedantic.The Tao Te Ching is like a mountain, and every translator like a guide. Red Pine is sure-footed; he points out the great features of the thing but never forces it on us. We are left to contemplate its grandeur and harrow its mysteries largely for ourselves. No doubt translations of the Tao will continue to be made, but after this book you may never need them.~

The only language in which the Taoteching could have been written is Classical Chinese, a medium seemingly open enough to accomodate any translation without losing anything at all. But we should keep in mind, as the good book here says, ". . . the Tao in words is not the real Tao . . ." We could say that Classical Chinese could not really, in our day and age, be served up in literal translation, and we can be grateful to Red Pine, once again, that in this fabulous rendering, he does not begin with the words, but rather with the Tao.Paul Reps once told me that we humans "are on the outside looking in". Like the space between the kanji strokes, as with the Chinese, thus with the Tao, and even the Truth. (Chapter 11: "Thirty spokes converge on a hub, but it's the emptiness that makes a wheel work . . ."This translation does work. As in his other impressive translations (I especially love his moving early 1990's translation of Bodhidharma - recommended to all who wish to learn more of Ch'an or Zen) there breathes an immediacy which flows forth into the consciousness of our moment, resonant in these teachings. I like science. I tend to like Science-y books. I am conflicted about this one. There are some very interesting factoids in this book, especially about the universe and the elements. The illustrations are in black and white and rather bland but I got past those easily. What I did not enjoy was the writing style. The authors are attempting to show science in a nerdy comical way but it just fell flat for me. For instance, there is a personality "quiz" which has nothing to do with personality and everything to do with being a page filler that did not contribute anything very scientific and wasn't very funny. Some of the experiments were complicated like buying a super neodymium magnet which can cut you and cause blisters just to be able to see the iron fortification in your food blended unappetizing Lucky Charms.Many times the authors digress from their science-y stuff into tangents that I skipped over like the voices in one of the author's heads. There are times the writing lapses into snarkiness like the sex section. The authors let us know that, yes, "Nerds do IT." And they let the reader know a paragraph later they mean "SEX! SEX! SEEEEEXX!!!" This is a straight quote from the book.This book is not without merit though. As I stated, the elements chapter is truly fascinating and the examples are very well researched and incredibly interesting. The illustrations look like doodles but that did not take away from the truly amazing information. I just wish more of the book had been dedicated to these intriguing everyday science-y things around us instead of some of the experiments that were not that interesting, like making static electricity.

The Element In The Room contains a fair bit of interesting scientific fact, presented in the sort of breezy and self-consciously clever manner that is typical of much of contemporary popular science these days. One gets the impression that the authors are apologizing in advance- yes, it’s science, but we’re not really taking it seriously. And there are no tests. Everyone gets an A!Once you get past the style there’s a fair bit of interesting scientific fact, although the authors sometimes dumb the presentation down so much that you wonder who they thought their audience would be. Consider this summary of entropy:- Energy is only useful when it’s clumped together- When you use that energy to do something useful it spreads out- Once it’s spread out, you can’t use it anymore.That strikes me as insufficient an explanation for elementary school students, and yet this book is aimed at adults. There are also several errors that should have been caught before publication. For instance, most menthol is made from peppermint oil, not turpentine. On page 47 we learn that 15th Century Peruvians freeze dried their crops in the mountains. What they dried was potatoes, to remove the solanine, and they still do it to this day. On page 116 we learn that “while the mercury in thermometers has been replaced with colored alcohol, there’s no alternative for energy saving bulbs” while might have been true a decade ago, but by the time this book was published CFLs were obsolete, replaced by energy saving, lead free LEDs.What really ruins this book for me is the horrible, amateurish, quality of the illustrations, most of which appear to be hand drawn or traced by someone who is not a particularly skilled artist. In many instances the illustrations are so bad that they don’t even convey the point the text is making. On page 75 there’s an illustration of the classic “Shepard’s table” illusion, in which two tables rotated 90 degrees from each other appear to be different sizes, but when measured are shown to be identical. In this instance, however, measurement reveals that the crudely drawn tables are obviously grossly different from one another. In fact, with just one exception, none of the optical illusions in this chapter show the effect described, thanks to the poor reproduction.While I wanted to like this book, it’s sloppy, poorly presented, and amateurishly illustrated. Not recommended.

I took this book to review because Zach Weinersmith recommended it and his book Soonish, is one of my favorite this year. I am a science (and math) geek.This book is a whole bunch of weird/interesting/experimental science tidbits. These tidbits are grouped together by subject. It has a lot of white space and really does not lend itself to reading cover to cover. This is more a book that you read a few sections of when you have a bit of time. Like snacking, rather than eating.Most people who are science geeks will pick up a few new things, I would say about 15% of this book was something I had not previously heard of. Overall the level of writing is pretty straightforward, a reasonably bright junior high student can understand at least 90% of this book. In fact, that might be the sweet spot for this book, smart middle school students who love cool science facts up to high school science students. I would, however, make sure they have supervision if making the fire tornado.Overall a fun light book written at a level that even those with a minor interest in science can comprehend. There are some freaky experiments included, sprinkled among lots of weird and quirky science facts.

My 8 yr old granddaughter is both an avid reader and a competitive swimmer. This book was perfect for her. Missy is a great role model.

Have enjoyed reading this book with one of my dyslexic students, who is also a competitive swimmer.

Missy's story is good but the writing is not up to par. The writer is repetitive. She seems like she is trying to add more pages for no reason!

It has great facts about how Missy Franklin became a swimmer. This has inspired me to do the best that I can in swimming and hopefully become an Oympic swimmer.

My daughter will love this !

It takes quite something to master the art of acrylic painting. Ruth Collins seems to have not only mastered it but has come up with easy tips and tricks to help others. I liked the tip on how to create rosettes in a raised 3D look. What’s amazing is that you only have to use pastry tools and there is no need of trips to expensive art supply stores.

This is so fun! I would have never thought to make cake decorating into a painting. This has easy to follow instructions and great tips.

For any artist, this is a great idea, easy step by step guide to make rosettes......If you want to be original in your art then go for it. Super book.

Having been familiar with all the cake decoarating tools Ms. Collis talks about made it very easy for me to follow her directions and instructions really well. This method of painting is a wide open field, very imaginative and innovative. One could go wild with the many uses of the left over paint leathers if there are any. Being demensional people we are never satisfied with flat surfaces. Ms Collis gives us an alternative way to create demension and use our God given talent to create beyond the norm.

I took Ruth's Udemy course "How To Paint a 3D Sculptural Rose" and was won over by how warm and inviting she was as she explained all of the steps one would take to create a 3D sculptural rose and, therefore, how to get started with your own sculptural painting. This book is a perfect follow-up to that course but also stands on its own as an even more detailed exploration of this exciting painting technique.The text is clear and easy to follow and the pictures really help the reader understand the steps and what to expect. Ruth also gives the reader lots of ideas for what other things are possible, beyond impasto rosettes. So, have fun with the techniques carefully and loving outlined in Ruth's guide (or through her course).I should point out that I am not a painter per se, I used to do some painting when I was younger but haven't touched a canvas or paints in quite some time. Ruth has definitely inspired me to change that as soon as I can find the time! :-)

Wonderful book, i did not know how hard making Impasto Rosettes would be but it was easy once i read this book. Short but concise. I would recommend.
