Grogan, a columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer, and his wife, Jenny, were newly married and living in West Palm Beach when they decided that owning a dog would give them a foretaste of the parenthood they anticipated. Maybe their first clue should have been that the breeder had discounted the price on their puppy, or when they saw his father charging out of the woods covered in mud with a crazed but joyous look in his eye. Despite these portents, Marley entered their lives, and nothing was ever the same again. Between careening through screen doors and swallowing everything that would fit in his mouth, Marley also managed to comfort these two when they miscarried their first child. Although Marley got kicked out of obedience training after he dragged the instructor across the parking lot and terrorized his pet sitter, he also landed a minor role in a straight-to-video movie. This is a book for dog lovers, and for those who have been loved by a dog. The Grogans may not have been the best dog trainers in the world, and they may have made a common mistake of buying their dog from a backyard breeder, but what they did right was they loved their dog, and stayed devoted to him through his whole life, from puppyhood to old age. In this throwaway society, where many people consider pets to be "disposable", to be dumped at the pound when they are no longer a cute puppy, or when they start misbehaving, the Grogans did what all responsible pet owners should do. They stuck with Marley, they tried to learn, they tried obedience classes, they worked with their vet to help control Marley's issues, and they actually considered their dog a part of their family, through good and through bad. Marley was one lucky dog, to have been owned by a family who loved him for who he was, and loved him for his whole life. Every dog should be so lucky.It really made me remember all the beautiful amazing times with my beloved dog who passed away, and it made me sad that she is gone.I hope my review has been helpful to you. This is not such a horrible book, as many would like you to believe. Sure, it isn't a jaw-dropping epic or an amazingly sappy story, but it is a good read that you can enjoy.I think I feel bad for the people who criticize John and his wife for how they treated Marley. First, it wasn't that horrible. In fact, Marley had it pretty good. A lot of people are failing to place the story in its proper time frame. Marley was born in the early 1990s--a time when positive training, counter conditioning, and clicker training were just beginning to take root and was not easily available to the public. Most people never even heard of such things---even very good vets. Dominance and Alpha theory were the rule of the day, and the choker chain was a common accessory for most dogs. I recall my own dog wearing one of those things, though I was a timid person who hated them and never actually used them.True, that didn't excuse several things that Mr. Grogan thought or did. He wasn't the best person in the world...but then again, he didn't hide it either. I give him brownie points for that. Most people try to make themselves seem better than they were, but the author laid himself out pretty honestly. How many people would write down that they actually found a sadistic pleasure in choking their dog during training class? He even put it in a negative light, showing that he was well aware that this was not a good thing. But anyone who has had a problem dog understands this feeling. It happens--frustration, anger, uncertainty can build up like that.A lot of people condemn the title of the book: Life and Love with the world's Worst dog. Hyperbole is often frowned upon, true, however---he addresses this at the end. Again, he brings to light something anyone with a problem of any kind knows: that feeling of being the only one. He even foreshadowed this when he described his first dog training class. All the other dogs were well mannered and lined up exactly as they should, while Marley ran rampant and drooled over everything. For years, he never met or knew of any dogs that behaved like Marley: until he wrote Marley's life down. Then he realized that he wasn't alone, that he didn't have the *worst* dog.While he jokingly refers to the Bad Dog Club and all its members, he also writes a very telling line: "My new friends in the Secret Brotherhood of Dysfunctional Dog Owners." It is a subtle admittance that he now realizes that, yes, he was not the best of owners and he failed on many accounts--some of which he had no way of really dealing with at the time.John Grogan did everything he could with the tools he had. I dislike his seeking the cheapest, shadiest dog training school (parking lot?) but I honestly don't recall dog training classes being anything more than in someone's house or rented community center at the time (I was a teen then, and didn't look so I can't say for sure).I'm divided on his ill-timed vacation, too. I mean, there was no way he could have predicted what would happen. Even the vet didn't know when or where, only that it was a possibility. He made sure to put Marley in the best care with the people that loved him and wanted the best for him, and when he came back: the dog was mostly fine! Most likely, it was the excitement of seeing his family again that did it, but who knows? Having lost a few pets of my own over my lifetime, and knowing that our own lifes go on, I can't really condemn him for it or blast him for such a horrible choice because...he really couldn't have known. It was very possible that Marley would have gone on for another couple of years, or would have passed at any moment.What stands out in this book is that John Grogan truly loved Marley. His family really cared for him, and they did the best they could. I think the reason why this book is so popular is because it resonates with the average person: the ones who don't or didn't know that they could have helped their dog overcome their phobia, could have taught him to properly direct his energy--that it was possible to have the "good dog" he wanted with a lot of hard work. At the time, there was no "hard work" only sighs of "too bad." I think he knows better now, at least I hope he does. By the time he wrote this book and published it, all the information he could have used began to be more widely available. Perhaps he regrets what he didn't know, or maybe he uses these things with his new dog.This isn't really a book about what not to do. It is more a book about what used to be. In that respect, it is actually pretty accurate.

This is just the kind of hilarious, fun book I like to read, but because I saw the movie, I almost never read books AFTER I’ve seen the movie. For me it’s the other way around: I read the book and see the movie, usually to see how much better the book was.It’s been a long time since I saw the movie, so I gave the book a chance, and I’m glad I did—the humor and endless comedy was a blast. Marley destroyed countless pieces of furniture and screen doors. He routinely ate things like parts of their stereo equipment and once, a gold necklace that was a gift from author John Grogen to his wife, Jenny. Grogen then reports in hilarious detail being on poop patrol in his attempt to rescue the expensive necklace from Marley’s prodigious defecation offerings to their backyard.Everything about the book is funny or touching. Even the birth of their first child was told in hysterical detail.Marley got kicked out of obedience school the first time for being too incorrigible. When they went back many months later, he did manage to pass—and he quickly snatched his diploma from John’s hands and ate it.If you’ve ever shared your life with a dog (even cats like to destroy plants, especially if they’re hanging and they can pounce on them from any surface and yank them out of the wall so you come home to dirt and plant shreddings spattered across your carpeting. They also like to topple books from shelves and sit on your keyboard while you’re on deadline for work), you’ll identify with the funny stories of how much work animal companions can be, and how much we miss them when they’re gone. If you live in a place that doesn’t allow animals, you’ll also feel a little better about how simple and unencumbered your life is, but you’ll feel a wistful sense of loss, too.

What a wonderful book. We had a Lab/Shepherd mix for 15 years who was the image of St Shaun, but his heart was just like Marley’s. Thirty years after his death, I still se little clones running around Lake Placid. He was a busy boy. Seeing his 3rd, 4th and 5th generation descendants make me miss him still. Marley has brought back all that love like nothing else I’ve ever read.

I havent seen the movie and i like books about animals so I picked this book up. It was a quick and enjoyable read. Marley was a lot of trouble and i can relate as we have had some trying times with very badly behaved cats. Although he was a lot of trouble, Marley was also very loveable. Hats off to Grogan for sticking with Marley and loving him through the pain.

I had read several good reviews of this one, so I decided to read it for myself. Sebold, a rape survivor herself, tells the story of 14 year old Susie watching from heaven as her family tries to come to grips with her rape and murder. It was a beautiful, disturbing and memorable book. Her idea of heaven doesn't correspond with mine, but that's a minor point. The book was well-written--she goes back and forth in time with memories and yet it flows smoothly. If you think you can handle it, you should read this haunting novel.

Yes, we survivors can tell in a second of eye contact.Alice's courage may be appreciated by many, but is viscerally appreciated by other victims.Her prose and the rhythm of her writing makes this memoir all the more powerful--as if the story weren't horrific and devastating enough, of the rape and of being forced to live the rest of your life with the flinching and rage of someone who has been forever altered by having been raped.Thank you, Alice Sebold.

Frankly, you'd have to be sick to "love" this book. It opens with a horrifyingly detailed description of the author's rape when she was a virginal college freshman. Then it describes her experiences with a police/court system that put rape at the bottom of it's priority list. It's brutal and depressing. It's also a book that you'll be glad you read and that you'll never forget.I bought this book over two years ago because it was on sale and the description sounded fascinating, if forbidding. It took me two years to work up to reading it and another six months to work up to reviewing it. It's a hard book to read and an even harder book to talk about.I DIDN'T buy it because it was written by a best-selling author. I was vaguely aware that there was a much-talked-about movie "The Lovely Bones" and that it was based on a novel. But I never read new fiction and I failed to connect that book and it's author with this one. Now, of course, I see the connection. Ms. Sebold first fictionalized her rape, then (when she was able) she wrote about it as the shocking truth it was and is.Because rape is a crime that no victim walks away from without deep, lasting scars. Even a strong, confident woman must deal with the anger, fear, and shame of being forcibly, brutally raped. And Alice Sebold was as vulnerable as any young woman who ever lived.I DID love the beautifully told, deeply sad story of her childhood in a suburb in Pennsylvania. It was a neighborhood of families who had "made it" and their children should have been living "Leave It to Beaver" lives. But the Sebold parents bore no resemblance to the warm, loving Cleavers. Both husband and wife were running from the demons of their own childhoods - poverty, harsh parents, unreasonable expectations. Two people who are drowning in their own inner turmoil have little left to give their children.Mr. Sebold was a brilliant academician. Absent physically much of the time and absent emotionally ALL the time, he left the care of his two young daughters to his wife. The fact that she was an alcoholic did not (in his mind) disqualify her from raising their children. When she was drunk, he closed the door to their bedroom and told his daughters "Mommy has a headache." Then he went back to his books.Eventually, Mrs. Sebold stopped drinking, but she never dealt with the cause - her anger at being forced into a role that she didn't want and wasn't able to fulfill. If times had been different, she and her husband might been a contented childless professional couple. But that wasn't how things were done in the 1950's. Mrs. Sebold retreated from life as a full-time mother into the comfort of alcohol. Deprived of booze, she replaced it with crippling anxiety attacks. Her husband retreated into his professional life and their daughters got along as best they could.Having been raised by a woman who loved being mother to a large family and a father who felt at least SOME some responsibility for parenting his children, I cannot imagine the sadness of the author's childhood. As she says, they were NEVER a family, but "four solitary souls" living in the same house. Alice Sebold was raped emotionally many times before a stranger dragged her into a secluded tunnel.Her older sister Mary was a pleaser and an achiever. She was taking her final college exams when her younger sister was raped. Alice was more of a rebel than her sister, but neither of them escaped their mother's strict rules and her obsession with sexual purity. Was she hoping to keep her daughters virgins so that they didn't make the "mistake" of having children of their own? If so, it worked.Sebold's story of her family's reaction to her rape is almost unbelievable and yet it's probably more common than otherwise. Typically, her mother focused on creating the proper outfit for her daughter to wear to court. Clothes make the rape victim, right? Her father made painful and sometimes surprisingly effective attempts to comfort his daughter, but nothing in their history made it easy for him to give love or for her to accept it.Equally fascinating were the reactions of the young people around her. Expecting little support from her parents, she reached out to her peers with sometimes startling results. And she was forced to come to terms with the fact that her rape was NOT a passing phenomenon, but a last legacy. She had joined a club that no one wants to be a member of.The story has a happy ending. Alice Sebold went on to find a rewarding life as a teacher of creative writing. She says her students "saved" her. And she eventually became an acclaimed writer. No one could be more deserving of her "luck."I'm glad I read this book. It's one I'll never forget.

Reading this book after watching the movie adapted from it was enjoyable. I seek these out and am usually rewarded. As I read..reflecting on the changes that were made adds a level of comfort to the read. Highly recommend this book and the movie.

Very well written and the little details of human interaction and observation are what makes this story so unique and special. As a new mother, the beautiful parent-child perspectives caused me to stop and look at my parents anew. I also look at my little baby girl and can't imagine this happening to her but that's the world we live with, I suppose. Horrible and lovely all at once. Well done.

This book is in no way easy to read. It starts out with a graphic account of 18 year old Alice Sebold's rape. I say account because it is mostly just facts, but that doesn't make it any easier to read. However I do think it was necessary to know the details to be able to understand how a horrible ordeal that lasted an hour affects the victim forever in so many different ways. It's a story of courage but without a halo. Sebold doesn't come off as having all the answers. She just explains how she got through the rape, trial and its aftermath. And she didn't do it without difficulty.The book strikes me as clinical in many ways, in particular Sebold's account of the trial and the defense attorney's attempt to exonerate his client. The facts themselves are enough to indict the legal system that always tries to blame the female victim. However, in this case, the prosecutors had a nearly perfect victim. Sebold was a virgin before the rape, was brutally beaten in easily photographed ways, had not used drugs or alcohol and after a few initial stumbles, is able to catch on to the defense lawyer's attempts to cast a bad light on her or twist her words. I really appreciate that the book didn't become a raging diatribe at any point. It simply points out ,as Sebold says, that being a woman can suck, because they are always trying to smash you down. Even the aftermath of the rape and Sebold's trying to get on with her life after the rapist's conviction rings very true and is touching without trying to emotionally manipulate.If you want to know how such a brutal crime can affect you or simply read about someone who made it through, it's worth reading this book.

I would recommend this book as it was recommended to me . It made one think about what becomes of us when we die. It lets our imagination go to more possibilities of what our life could be like when we pass on, whether a terrible death or at the end of a long and happy life. As many believe the dead can return and influence these we leave behind. It makes life after death not as scary if we can see what how such a terrible death can change those wee care about.

I am fascinated by the "Art Forms in Nature". The natural designs are unbelievable and amazing. There are tons of ideas for mandalas and other creations (especially beading). This book can really enhance your imagination. I gave it only four stars because I was disappointed that none of the plates are in color....only on the cover.

This is a beautiful calendar but it arrived very creased where the pages are stapled and with a large crease running up the middle. The calendar itself is what I expected, but I'm disappointed in the packaging. It was inadequate for how rough shipping companies are (the packaging does say "Do Not Crease" but of course no one pays attention to that. I should have taken a photo of how creased the package was when I got it.) It needed to be reinforced better so I would have gotten an undamaged item.That said, the illustrations are beautiful and despite the damage I will keep it.

The calendar arrived in good shape. It is printed on high quality paper and the colors are clear. I've always been fascinated by the artwork of Ernst Haeckel. Hows attention to detail is unmatched and he brings to life creatures that most humans will never see. I highly recommend checking out the work of this great artist!!

Anyone who 'knows' Dover books, will probably agree that they offer good quality for very reasonable prices. There is nothing 'wrong' with this book, except that all the plates are in black and white, and there is no information on Haeckel and his times. Prestel has also published this book of plates, with a highly informative article on Haeckel, his influences, and those influenced by him included, AND with many of the plates 'in color' (that is, often one color in different -subtle - hues, or a color scheme based on two colors). Unless you are a strictly 'black and white' person, I would advise you to look for the Prestel book.

I got my first Ernst Haeckel calendar for 2017 as a gift. The prints are frame worthy. I had to get another one for this year. Prettiest calendar I've ever had.

Before ordering, I read all the reviews and became aware that many were disappointed by the fact that the plates are actually black and white rather than in color. Still I decided to go for the black and white edition. Well.. I am so happy for making up my mind against the warnings of others. Only the black and white images can fully convey the magic and power of the forms and shapes in the nature. I would expect that the colors, although beautiful, can be an obstacle to fully appreciate the actual form. I love this book, it's a real treasure!

This book is WONDERFUL! Haeckel's illustrations are phenomenal and are Uber-inspirational. As an artist, this is a book that I'll keep and use forever.

This book is so amazing. So interesting and inspiring for art use.

The books in this series seem to only cover the very basics of their titles. Monitoring and lowering food costs in a restaurant is not discussed in the great depth one would assume from the title.

Awesome information to help a restaurant, from opening the doors for the first time, what computer programs that help with anything and everything. Love this series of books.

Anyone who knows a thing or two about finance or managerial accounting will find this book repetitive. Don't waste your money or worst your time reading it!.

This piece of drivel is merely a way to conduct legal theft. It is repetitive repetitive repetitive repetitive and fails to give any concrete advice, instead offering only common sense thinking (placing your freezer by the back door promotes theft). Don't waste your money.

The table of contents alone gives an impression of how thoroughly this book covers all the aspects of managing costs in restaurants and food service operations. The book is also well organized and accessible - important concepts are clearly explained, and examples are well chosen. And it is also timely: no matter how attractive or imaginative your restaurant might be, controlling costs is critical to maintaining financial stability in a competitive environment.Here in a single, engaging volume is everything you are likely to encounter (and the answers too!) in keeping costs down and sales up. A recommended investment.
