Tavi and her fellow Golds are still hard at work, trying to oust the Grays, magic-wielders who have overcome the resistance in their magic by stealing the last breath of a gifted person as they’ve killed him or her.It is no small thing to take a band of young adults, just barely out of their childhood, up against the power of the state, especially when it is being run by a totally unscrupulous chief minister, but that is the task they have set themselves. They will come back with their shields or on them, so to speak. How do they fare on this do-or-die journey? Oh, come on, you can’t expect me to give it all away, can you? It’s a good read and high adventure as the plot proceeds.
I am very grateful to the author for a copy of this audio book in exchange for my honest review. Facing the Fire is a culmination of the Sun-Blessed Trilogy. Like the first two novels the descriptions of the environment and events have exquisite detail, allowing one to imagine being part of the experience. The internal reflection and thoughts of the characters is still a strong component and the question of how a decision might impacts both oneself and others is considered. As I titled this review, "Will it be worth it just to have tried?" is a question that Tavi asks herself as she makes decisions throughout the novel and it seems like an important question for young adults today to reflect on as well. Both of these aspects are key elements of growing up, but I think are likewise lost on our culture today. There were a few places in the novel where I felt like it dragged a little with the same idea being replayed, but reflecting at the end, I'm not sure how I would have changed those scenes. The integration of worldview, history, faith and morality is masterfully done. The interplay of good vs. evil is well woven. While reading this series I also happened to be studying spiritual gifts and I reflected on how the magical gifts of the characters might allude to spiritual gifts in the Church - how people work both individually and collectively for the sake of the Gospel. This might be over-interpreting the novel, but it was a cool connection for me. Without hesitation I would recommend this novel and this series to those who enjoy an interplay of historical ideas, a bit of fantasy, deep character development, conviction and traditional family values.
What an amazing story. You can take the words in the book at face value, and get the lesson it's teaching, of good fighting evil, or you can read the deeper meanings in the story. Creation, love, hate, evil, honesty, integrity, the values every person holds, and how society can manipulate those intangible things into something you never expected or even wanted. Each of us has to make a conscience decision every day to either hold onto our beliefs, or let them go just a little in order to 'fit in'. The problem with letting go just a little, is that eventually, you've let go a lot, and end up where the society in this story (and frankly, where our own society) has ended up. All it takes to turn it around, though, is one or two people to start saying NO to the evil.Read the book, see if you agree with what I got from it. Either way, it's a really great story.
I was fortunate enough to enjoy the tidbits Carol Beth Anderson shared during the birth and growth of this trilogy via Facebook. I could hardly wait to dive in. Facing the Sun had me captivated from the beginning. I love the originality of the magic system and the peek into the history of Tavi and her family and friends' world through the snippets of Ellea's writings. The characters are relatable and the storytelling is amazing! Facing the Gray had me on the edge of my seat, and Facing the Fire was a gripping close to the trilogy. I was completely drawn in through all three books, empathizing, cheering, laughing, crying, hoping, fearing, debating, and rooting for good to overcome evil. I loved the series, and didn't want it to end!
Facing the Fire is the 3rd book in the Sun Blessed trilogy. This book brings the whole story to closure. At times the story seems too long and slow but the story itself is wonderful. There is magic and action and danger and love- all the things a good story should have. I love that not just one person is the savior, but it really is a team effort (even though the whole story is based on one person being the one). The story is appropriate for 10 yrs and older but young kids might get bored at times. This is a magical unique tale that I highly recommend!
With Facing the Fire, we see the completion of the fight against the pollution of magic. While the story shows you can't remove all the consequences of misuse of power, it also shows a sense of redemption for those willing to learn and do better. The ending was satisfying, and yet I was sad for the series being completed. I look forward to seeing what else the author writes. I highly recommend the whole series.
Great finish to this series! Plenty of suspense, plot twists, and surprises to keep me interested and guessing but just enough predictability to make my heart happy in the end! A story with an underlying message of learning to believe that you are enough to face and overcome whatever battles or obstacles are put in your path.Darker topics such as violence and death are dealt with in a manner that isn’t gory so the story continues to be suitable for teens through adult.A solid series from a first time author and narrator. I look forward to hearing more from this writer!
I loved this book. It finished the Sun-Blessed Trilogy beautifully. I loved the big themes, the nuanced plot, the character development (I love these people), and I was left wanting more. Even though I got closure...I didn't want to say goodbye to the characters. To me, this is a true sign of success. I don't want to ruin any part of the story line, but if you love character development and unlikely friendships and alliances, this trilogy is for you!
