This is a charming tale of a woman who lives in the segregated neighborhood in Charlotte, NC. It is an easy read, with a glimpse into a life of a single mother who has always lived in her house, raised by her grandmother and uncle. There is the minister, grieving the loss of his wife and still ministering to his to parish. There is the white woman who struggles with infertility and the lack of her husband's attention. Their stories are all tied into the city's plans to tear down the section of town, that city planners are calling a "blight."This is a quick read and while it sounds superficial, it is still a thoughtful tale of life in the 60s as people are forced to move out of their homes to make way for "progress." It has the tales that are haunting -- stories of families who can trace their lineage back to the slave-holding days, and finding refuge in a small section of town with one another.I really enjoyed the novel, and wished it was much more indepth of the characters and their lives. It is a quick read and like her first book, thoroughly thoughtful.

In the early 60s, many large cities started a plan called urban renewal - it was a way to make space for the new large buildings that they planned in the future. In many places, urban renewal meant displacement of the people who lived in the neighborhoods that were being destroyed to make way for the future. Tomorrow's Bread is about urban renewal in Charlotte, NC, where an entire area was wiped out called Brooklyn. The residents of Brooklyn were mostly black and poor but they had a community of friends and a pride in their area that had existed there since the end of the civil war. After I finished the book, I wanted more information about the urban renewal and found several interesting articles. I love it when I enjoy a book and also learn about a part of history that I had no idea happened. This is one of those books - you will love these characters and ache with them as they leave their old lives behind and work to create new lives in areas very different from the life they've always known.I read an advance copy of this book. Mayhew perfectly captures the essence of how this must seem to the inhabitants with this quote at the beginning of one of her chapters. It is from Langston Hughes who said, "Misery is when you heard on the radio that the neighborhood you live in is a slum, but you always thought it was home."From the very first page, I was eager to spend time with Loraylee Hawkins, her young, bi-racial son, Hawk, her grandmother, Bibi, and Uncle Ray, the pastor Eben Polk, and all the rest, because they were realistic, and became characters I cared about. Mayhew has given us a wonderful, original account of a time that reminded me of another place similar to Brooklyn, the small community known as Soul City in Warren County NC. Mayhew's TOMORROWS' BREAD is a story that is pertinent even today, a distinctive work at once engaging and provocative.

Told in the alternating voices of a young mother, a preacher, and the wife of a man on the planning board, this lovely but sad novel is about the impact of "urban renewal" on a long standing comment in Charlotte, North Carolina. Brooklyn is an "old" African American part of town which the planners think can be better. Better for whom? Not necessarily for the people who live there. Loraylee, whose son was fathered by the white man she loves but can not appear with in public isn't a winner. Paster Ebeneezer Polk, whose church will go, is not a winner. Persey, who doesn't live in Brooklyn, might seem the odd person out because she's not directly affected but she is, isn't she? Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. This book provides answers in a consistent, Lutheran, and Christocentric way.Curious about voodoo culture, but want a perspective a bit deeper than a tourists? It's in there. What about Native American ancestor rituals? Generational curses? Psychic Expos? General American spiritualism and the spiritual effects of multi-culturalism? This book will give you things to think about.I'll admit. A few times I paused in hesitation as I was reading. I wondered whether the author was going too far or would somehow jump off the deep end. I'm happy to report that he is not encouraging superstition or jumping to conclusions. He does not see the devil behind every rough day or nasty look. At the same time, the devil can be in the details of the temptations floating around us. That doesn't really surprise us, does it? Still, perhaps it happens more often then we would like to admit.There really is spiritual warfare in America. If you believe that, as well as the power of God's Word, then this book offers a well-written (very readable) introduction. It offers a very Lutheran approach, focusing on God's promises, God's Son, and God's means of grace, and there are helpful quotes from Scripture, hymnody, the Confessions, and Large Catechism.A few parts are repetitive. I appreciated it, however, thinking that I should include this in a homeschool religion class when my kids are in high school.I also appreciated how the author demonstrated, again and again, how exorcism, or exorcistic practices, exists through Scripture, hymnody, and church practices. To put it another way, this was instructive about more than spooky things: there are positive benefits to learn about the gifts God has already given to us, even if suffering—even intense suffering—continues to be experienced in this world.It is nicely and widely applicable to a surprising extent. I loaned it out the same day I finished reading it! I recommend it.

As a Lutheran and a person who has had many paranormal experiences, I was very happy to see this book. How often Christians dealing with the demonic are only given the option of the Roman Ritual, which itself relies on certain things that can be viewed as idolatrous, i.e. holy water. Pastor Bennett brings a Christian common sense approach, built on the assurances of Scripture. I only wish he'd included more examples of the various types of spiritual warfare we encounter. I had never heard that a house blessing is in fact an exorcism; that was new to me. There are far too many pastors that are either unfamiliar or uncomfortable with the subject and I would encourage them to read the book. I would actually go even further and recommend that it be required reading for seminarians. I would enjoy an author to author discussion with Pastor Bennett.

For any under-shepherd tending the Lord's sheep, this book will open your eyes to an often overlooked aspect of spiritual care. All to often we forget that Satan is a ravenous lion seeking souls to devour, and those souls belong to God's children (for the devil already counts any and all lost souls as his). Even if it's not understood, let alone realised, this book will help you more fully understand the spiritual warfare Christians face and how faithful servants of the Lord can aid and assist them in their struggles.

This wonderful book's only downfall is that it is such an interesting read that I read it in one sitting. In his book, Bennett shows us why we need to fear the Old Evil Foe, and more importantly, shows us what Christ has done to redeem us from the Foe. In these pages, one gains a proper understanding of the feebleness of the Christian souk, and the strength of the Good Shepherd who protects us from he who madly seeks our overthrow. This work ought to be regarded as a must-read for Christian Catechesis.

Very impressed to read views about spiritual warfare by a Missouri Synod Lutheran pastor. Though I don't believe baptism "saves" us, I do know that the name of the Lord Jesus is powerful. Even more powerful in dispelling demon possession or attachments is for a person to become a believer and follower of Jesus Christ. In that way, they have the Holy Spirit living within them -- and "greater is He that is in us that he that is in the world" (1 John 4:4). Still, for a mainline Protestant church leader to finally realize that we are in a spiritual battle which is REAL and not just symbolically is AWESOME! I highly recommend reading this author's books -- especially if you are in a mainline denominational Christian protestant church.

I couldn't put this book down. I finished it in a matter of days, instead of the weeks or months it usually takes me for a theological book.

Well written and contains a lot of examples and illustrations, worth reading.

Every one need to read this book. Highly recommended.

This book is a very sweet and informative story about a 2 year old with a G tube. It is perfect for parents of children with feeding tubes to read to their children. My son had a big grin on his face when we read it together. It is also informative of some of the struggles a Tubie baby faces as well as some of the care involved in protecting the Mic-key button. It also serves as a reminder that children with G tubes can still have normalcy in their lives and participate in everyday childhood activities. This book was published in a timely manner for our family. I'm so thankful we have it to share with our son!

I bought this book for my 20 month old grandson and his brothers to help them understand his upcoming Mic-Key placement and surgery. It is simple, factual and calming. It will be going to the hospital with him along with his tubey bear. The author so simply explains her son’s life that I see my grandson in the pictures from the NG tube to talking about therapists and not knowing the cause of the problem. This book is a must for families facing tube feedings.

Not what I thought it was going to. My son is non ambulatory and has an AMT mini one button and this focused on a different brand. Made it hard for son and his sister to relate too. Must be great for those that can relate.

It is very important that they understand the larger Bible and how it all comes together. Some of the emails he includes in the book that he has received prove the need for some education as to the framework of the Biblical message and sadly reflect some of the questions I've been asked as well. If your people don't know what Jesus being the Messiah has to do with us being saved, or if they're asking if Jesus preached Paul's message, you would do well to spend more time teaching the actual content of the Bible rather than messages that build upon Biblical concepts your congregation isn't familiar with in the first place.The author understandably spends quite a bit of time trying to reassure the reader that he is not speaking against personal salvation or the evangelism process, he is simply trying to get us to stop and spend some more time developing an understanding of the actual life and story of Jesus, and the rest of the Bible that is a very important part of the context and why we need a salvation in the first place.He also spends some time highlighting that we are not done once we are saved and that there is a reason we are still here. Our behavior, actions, motivations, and routes through which we do evangelize and disciple others should be in keeping with what we know about Jesus. We are to live for Him in light of what He showed us. There is a lot more growth as a Christian that takes place after that conversion moment and too often Christians are allowed and even encouraged to sit in stagnation after that moment. If we really understood the Bible, it would not be the everyday car payments and such that take up 99% of our conscious awareness day in and day out.

I value this work greatly as a pastor and as a denominational worker. We should be challenging our churches to embrace the gospel to the fullest extent in every way possible.

We have been teaching people they need to make a decision to believe in Jesus when we should have been directing people to follow Jesus. Of course you can't truly follow Jesus without belief, but after reading this book I think you can't really believe in Jesus without wanting to follow him. It's about far more than just deciding to believe in Jesus so I can be saved. When we teach people that Jesus is good for us because he saves us and then make discipleship (a whole-life following) to him a secondary aspect, we run the risk of people using Jesus as a mega-sized good luck charm...which is not really believing in Jesus. It's spiritualized self-preservation, which makes Jesus all about me, instead of making me all about Jesus.

Another way of putting it is this: the gospel is the Story of Israel that finds resolution in the saving Story of Jesus, and that story is about God’s work in this world in the people of God.The above quote from this very important book summarizes for me what Dr. Scot McKnight is trying to emphasize.
