Fine intro text if you're just starting out on your TS journey. I came across it about a year after our child's diagnosis and by then I'd already run into all this information elsewhere and frankly, it doesn't go into much detail in a way that would have been really helpful. A far better resource is the recorded seminar for new families at the Tourette's Syndrome Association [...] You'll probably want to watch it a couple of times. I draw on that information constantly.

As a grandparent of a child diagnosed with TS, I found this book to be the most informative for the lay person. It touched on almost every question I had and had a great reference section for more in depth subjects. It was practical and helped with all the decisions you might have to make: how to pick a doctor, meds or not, handling child's social interactions, helping school set up a teaching plan, getting in touch with local and national support groups and organizations, etc. I was able to talk with his parents and understood what they were dealing with. They had to also confront their own feelings and appreciated being able to talk to someone who cared about them also.

Wish I had this book years ago when my daughter was first diagnosed! I recommend this book to every parent with a child with TS. There's so much more information in this book than any other book/web-site/pamphlet etc... all together in one book! I first found this book at the library and kept referring back to it that I just had to buy my own copy!Includes excellent advice on how to work with your child's school.

This is a great book for parents learning how to deal with tourette's. It gives very helpful advice and insight into dealing with the syndrome. We reference it frequently for our children.

I ended up going to a natural health practitioner and we did candida yeast cleansing, which brought up his protein levels and eliminated his symptoms. Then after a recurrence, we did it again and went on to detox mercury with iodine therapy. Mercury overstimulates dopamine. This permanently cured him. Much better than living with it.

I coordinate a program for middle school students where we do H.W. after school. One of our students this year has Tourette Syndrome (TS), which has to be frustrating to the student, his family, his friends, and his teachers. His mom gave me a copy of this book. It really shows me that every case of TS is different and may actually change a bit over time. Any educator who has a student with this disorder would benefit by read this book. It is probably a good idea even if the teacher does not have a student with TS. What happened was that in describing the symptoms, I realized that I probably had students with a mild version of TS in the past. If I had read the book, it might have helped me fit a piece into the puzzle. I am going to purchase 3 copies of this book, one for the library in my town, one for the library in the town I work in, and one for the library in the school where our H.W. Club meets.

This seems like it would be helpful for children age 8+. We have a difficult 4-year-old and this was not geared towards little ones.

I am mom to a 7-year old ADHD and defiant child. I have had behavioral services in my home for five years, but none of the behavioral approaches or discipline systems worked consistently. When my child began therapy with Dr. Bernstein, I began implementing his program "10 Days to a Less Defiant Child," in my home. This book has completely changed our lives and our family dynamic. Although it is a work in progress, Dr. Bernstein's program has shown us consistent positive results and, frankly, has given us hope for our child's future. I also found the section on ADHD to be extremely valuable. I learned so much from reading this book that specifically applies to my child, and I am so grateful for Dr. Bernstein's practical steps and insights!

There is a lot of useful information in this book. It is easy to read, and easy to follow step by step.For several years my kids and I have been locked in unproductive power struggles in increasingly poor communication. As my 14 year old hit teenage years, I felt I lost any control or influence over her choices and decisions. Her 10 year old brother could not be pulled away from the computer and other gaming devices. I felt that I was turning into a parent I swore I'd never be!From the first chapter, as I implemented the recommendations of Dr. Bernstein, I started to notice a shift. My kids even commented that I changed, though they did not seem to trust my new "calm, firm, non-controlling" approach for a while. After a relatively brief time, though, they saw that I meant to change the way I spoke and behaved with them, and they started to respond much better to my limits, and my requests. For the first time in several years we actually have fun together. Our relationship has become more cooperative and trusting.I found recommendations related to my teen and pre-teen's online activity particularly helpful.I have recommended this book to several of m friends, and they saw positive changes in their families, as well.

I'm working it...If you are looking for a miracle formula to instantly change your defiant, ODD, ADHD, or plain ornery child, this is not it..This is a book that validates your child's feelings and behaviors, and shows you how to understand and interpret and react (or not)..It is about changing the way you deal with the defiant child.. which in turn changes the defiant behaviors... helps with the overwhelming feelings of dispair and failure we parents of defiant children have..We have not failed, a defiant child needs to be handled a different way. When the rewards, bribes, screams, yells, punishments etc don't work, sometimes a simple whisper may.In the week I've been working the book, I have only raised my voice once, and my kiddo has actually willing helped around house.. now, don't think I'm saying she's been an angel or all issues are gone. My reactions have been consciously changed, and that seems to be making an impact.I am hopeful that as we continue working the book it will get even better.. and if that happens, when that happens I will add the 5th star.. but so far, so good..There is no magic cure, but with love, patience, self-control and consistency small miracles can happen.

It doesn’t matter who the child or parent we all have our own challenges to make us better people.What I did NOT like about the book is the title... it perhaps limits the appeal, though gets the attention. Get past ‘judging a book by its cover’This book is gentle and kind for the parent and the child.The book address concerns all parent face. Rather than leave you hanging it offers practical ‘doable’ advice. And encourages you to do so.Yes some of the suggestions you would be doing- it is affirming to read so and coarse adjust and tweak.Yes some may be new suggestions or rub the wrong way..... try them none the less- you have everything to gain!I loved the quote from the book “you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink” I have felt this way and this is what I loved is the next bit of the quote “the horse will drink when thirsty” and I absolutely concur!! I know I needed this reminder.This is going to be one of those dog eared loved books I refer to.Thank you.

Amazing book. It really worked for my 5 year old son. I would like to thank the author for helping parents in such a simple way.Applying the advises and strategies in this book really made a change in his behavior.Although adjusting behavior is not a fast process or we should not have unrealistic expectations and give it up easily.

This book was purchased by many in our family to deal with a teenage girl, stepdaughter, and has been extremely helpful for all of us. A complete game changer. If you are having issues with defiance, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Within days we changed our behavior, and in turn, the defiance has become MUCH less of an issue. Very, very beneficial.

Well written, great case studies, very effective. Highly recommended.

Well this is embarrassing! While only two-thirds of the way through reading this very enjoyable introductory-level text on the classic philosophies incorporated into each of the Harry Potter novels, I accidentally left the book behind as I got off my commuter train last night. I checked at the train station this evening, and the book has not been turned in, from which I conclude someone else agrees this looks like a worthwhile book to read. I've also heard the same from a teen to whom I mentioned the book.I've now just put my money where my mouth is, and ordered another copy for my Kindle 3G. Thus, we have assurance I consider the Ultimate Harry Potter and Philosophy worth its asking price.For me, the book is useful in three ways: 1) as a pleasant refresher on the basic issues of Philosophy, and how those were dealt with by several of the best classic philosophers; 2) as a pleasant refresher on the important ideas, values and events of the entire Harry Potter series; and 3) as a bridge between generations, connecting popular culture with the enduring values of Western Civilization.One surprising aspect of the book is that it mentions libertarian ideas fairly often, which I'd not noticed when reading the Potter books originally. Thankfully, it also is supportive of the idea of absolute truths, rather than insisting as some modern philosophers do that everything is relative.As a team effort, some chapters are better than others, but all thus far are well worth reading.Definitely recommended!

Fun and excellent book. If I were a professor of philosophy (rather than my field), I'd teach a Harry Potter & Philosophy course using this as the main textbook. It's fun and interesting. I got the book on tape as well, and I have a blast listening to the analysis and connections using the Harry Potter universe with fun philosophic ideas (some of which I'm familiar with, and some not-so-much). Each chapter references the Harry Potter universe in great detail. Perfect for fans who want to dive into the philosophy Rowling used as well as fans who want to use this as a jumping off point to enter philosophy...or just think about concepts in a new, fun way, as I do.

An excellent book for any Harry Potter fan, this read delves into the world of Harry Potter from a philosophical and moral standpoint, using specific examples from both the books and the films (though primarily the books) to spark thought, debate, and otherwise enrich the world of HP. I would highly recommend this to HP fans.

Great literary criticism in addition to being a great introduction to many philosophical topics. The contributors are all accomplished in the academy, and are passionate Harry Potter fans. The truly surprising and pleasant discovery for one interested in scholarship and the enjoyment of popular literature, is that none of the arguments are stretched or force. The theses are strong and laudably defended. The books speak for themselves as worthy indeed of serious thought and scholarship.

I don't know a whole lot about philosophy, but after reading this book I feel that I have at least a basic grasp of philosophical concepts. I enjoy reading the Harry Potter books a lot and I find this book to be quite educational and interesting. So I would recommend any HP fan who wants to learn something about philosophy to read this book.If you enjoy reading this book, then you might also want to try "Batman and Philosophy: The Dark Knight of the Soul". That's also a pretty good book, and it complements this book well.P.S. I do wonder how the author/publisher got permission to use D. Radcliffe's image on the cover.

About the Author

Thelma Larkin Goldberg grew up in Cambridge, MA, where she studied dance at Bates School of Dance in Central Square. After earning her B.S. in Special Education from Lesley College in 1974, she taught in the Boston Public School system, earning her Masters in Special Education from Regis College while starting a family and relocating to Lexington, MA. After founding the Dance Inn in 1983, in the dining room of her home, Thelma eventually found her way to the rich tap scene in the Boston area, studying at the Leon Collins Studio in Brookline and meeting many of the friends and associates that have continued to inspire her since then. In 1997 she started Dance Inn Productions, a nonprofit organization, and served as its Executive Director, producing annual International Tap Day Festivals that honored master tappers with the Tapestry Award for Teaching. Among the dancers she has celebrated are Dianne Walker, Brenda Bufalino, Sarah Petronio, Buster Brown, Jimmy Slyde and Billy Siegenfeld. Thelma has taught at several festivals around the country and was on the faculty of the Boston Conservatory for many years. She founded and directed the Pre-Professional Program of Tap City: The New York City Tap Festival and is artistic director of the Legacy Dance Company, the pre-professional program of the Dance Inn. Her studio has now grown to two locations, and she continues to teach full time while mentoring a passionate, young faculty. Her goal is to dance forever!

After taking tap while growing up then not tapping for about 8 years and coming back to try to teach it, I was struggling with figuring out how to structure classes and build exercises that would prepare students to progress. Then I found this book, and it was exactly the answer I was looking for. The breakdown of the exercises is easy to follow and the progressions from one level to the next are easy to see and understand. I especially love the music suggestions and the extra tips about proper technique. Lots of little things I had forgotten after years away from tap. I can't wait to start using the exercises with my students over the summer and next year. I highly recommend this book to other tap teachers looking for tips and ideas to structure their classes. Thank you Thelma for creating this amazing book!!

Fantastic resource! I attended a workshop by Thelma Goldberg, and her warm, outgoing personality exudes through much of this book as well! Clever combinations and a great outline for different age-levels for tap.

I don't know if it's only my copy of the book, but pages 86-98 are out of sequence. The pages skip from page 87 to page 99; pages 88 to 98 are inserted between page 104 and page 105. This is an unacceptable error, especially in light of the $66.92 price tag on this paperback book. The content of the book is top-notch, but if all copies of the book are like this one, the publisher did a shoddy job.

Right from the very beginning, Thelma lays out exactly what her approach is to teaching tap to children ages 6-12 and she methodically breaks down her methods level-by-level.I appreciate how Thelma refers to herself as a student as well as a teacher. I have had the pleasure of taking classes with Thelma, so I know first hand what a dedicated and enthusiastic student she is. I also have seen a number of her studios productions over the years and can equally say she is a committed, passionate teacher, choreographer and leader. Because of this, I can say that Thelma is deeply rooted and she never stops growing!Thelma's Tap Notes is guided by four principles: Release, Relax, Rhythmic Progressions and Full Bodied Rhythm-Making (TM).
