Poems are, as my English teacher once told me, meant to be read aloud. I never feel as if I know a poem, as if it has been allowed to reach the deepest parts of my soul, until I have either read it out loud myself or heard it read. Mary Oliver is my favorite modern poet, bar none. I was so thrilled to find this CD (apart from the fact that I could not find anything anywhere to tell me what poems were on it before I bought it).I love it. To be honest, Ms. Oliver's voice took, for me, a little getting used to. There is nothing wrong with it, just not quite what I was expecting. Once I adjusted to it, I found myself enjoying her readings very much. What I find a little irritating (hence the four instead of five star rating) is the fair audio quality. Occasionally, you can hear pages turning and little throat sounds that, while human, ought not to be on a CD of this day and age. Still, I would suggest getting this with all my heart; hearing the poems, for me, added another dimenison to Ms. Oliver's incredible work. Since I found it fustrating that I couldn't find a list of tracks, I assume others will. So, here are the poems you will find on this CD:Some HeronsWild GeeseBeansThe SwanBoneHermit CrabGoldenrodI Looked UpThe Buddha's Last InstructionThe KingfisherBearSome Things, Say the Wise OnesHer GraveMindfulLonely, White FieldsWhere Does the Temple BeginGoldfinchesSong of the BuildersPeoniesFive A.M. in the PinewoodsThe Summer DayThe SunThe Snow CricketWhelksHumWhite FlowersRiceLittle Owl Who Lives in the OrchardMaybeWhen Death ComesLingering in HappinessThe PondsRoses, Late SummerThe NotebookDaisiesThe LilyKookaburrasMarengoWhite Owl Flies Into and Out of the FieldAt Blackwater Pond

As an annual visitor to Provincetown, where Mary Oliver resides, I first discovered her poetry in a local bookstore. While standing in it's cramped quarters, I was riveted by her matter of fact, yet stirring observations of life and nature. As listened, I imagine hers as the life I would love to live. I walk and observe through her eyes and ears and my life is much richer for having done so. Once back into my routine of commuting to work in New York City, I have recorded Mary's first CD onto my iPod. I can only attempt to express my joy-- at stepping upon the concrete sidewalks amidst crowds of busy people and rows of cars, trucks and taxis-- to hear Mary's quiet voice describing a Kingfisher. When I travel, when I'm weary and put-upon, when I'm just so pummelled by the obligations of work and routine, I select "At Blackwater Pond" and immediately calm and delight my soul.I cannot thank Mary Oliver enough.

Mary Oliver is certainly one of our finest contemporary poets. Her terse and sparse use of language in effect widens our horizons as we readers are able to expand our vision through her creative work. This CD has ample examples of her poetry, from several different volumes, and the listener can accompany the readings with personal copies of the published works. Oliver's ability to use the natural settings of her New England environment to state something profound about the human condition is one of her gifts. To see in the ordinary what is unforgettable, is another. Her language is visual, so that we see what she describes in new ways. This collection of poems, read by the poet, is a classic and one to be treasured and listened to over and over.

Hearing how Mary Oliver read her poetry gave me 'lessons' in how to approach and make pointed pausesthat give the poetry breathing time to resonate with the thought.Which can make a huge difference in the meaning.Poetry grows with familiarity and understanding.

What a marvel to hear her own voice reading her work. I wish she would do more

Mary Oliver is a Pulitzer Prize winning poet. Non-dogmatic spirituality quietly grabs you through her Zen awareness of the here and now. In and of themselves, her poems are passionate. Having her read them aloud is an extra bonus. This is a great collection to listen to when stuck in a traffic jam or when settling down at night for a peaceful sleep. Mary Oliver reading Mary Oliver. It's like pie a la mode!

I've always loved reading Mary Oliver's poetry, but hearing her own voice adds new depth of meaning to the words. She is a literary treasure!Carol Grever

Hearing her voice is magical. Her phrasing and emphasis match what I've had in my mind as I read her work.

Some of us took Latin in school because the Greek alphabet was the purview of fraternities and sororities, and we were by disposition and inclination “independents” from birth … and never gonna make Phi Beta Kappa in this lifetime, anyway. But, damnit, we loved Greek mythology! Ms. Barker does the Greeks (and definitely the Trojans) proud with her all-about-Achilles novel. At first I thought her writing too mundane for such grand subject matter. Where is Virgil when we need him?! For this I apologize. Her account of the last years of the Trojan War as related by Briseis aka Hippodameia (look her up!) is so compelling, so intimate, and so gory, I resented the fact that the novel ended.

As a classics major and Latin teacher for over thirty years, I have read many novels which retell the ancient myths from the female perspective. This was the most brutal but at the same time the most moving I have ever read. Reading it during the Kavanaugh hearings made it that much more meaningful. Beautifully written, this powerful book is a must read.

Greek myths, especially ones involving warfare are depicted primarily from the male perspective. This story departs from the usual recounting of the exploits of Achilles during the Trojan War in that Briseis is the central character. We see much of the protracted battle between the Greeks and the Trojans play out through her capture as Achilles’s war prize. The relationship triangle is explored among Achilles, Patroclus, and Briseis even though jealousy isn’t a primary factor. As Briseis is a slave, she adopts a realistic attitude of acquiescence to her servitude to survive. She bears witness to the unbreakable bond between Achilles and Patroclus and develops a strange sort of understanding of the anger that drives Achilles. Patroclus becomes her friend and treats her with unexpected but appreciated kindness. The day-to-day lives of the women slaves are described in excruciating detail. All the way from harem girls providing pleasure to women tending wounded soldiers, their existence alternates between hard labor, boredom, loneliness, pain, and terror. Briseis is one of the fortunate ones. As the prize of Achilles, she is given greater respect than most of the captured women, many of whom were former wives of Trojan aristocrats.Pat Barker’s writing puts you in the middle of the action. The story is immediate and unflinching. You smell the campfires, see the wounded men, and feel the sadness of the captured women. I offer a cautionary note that there are plenty of violent, brutal, and adult situations that some readers may not like.

This is my first Pat Barker book, and it's pretty good, but it's imperfect -- very imperfect. For one thing, the sentiments and vocabulary of Briseis are 21st Century sort-of feminist, and they seem misplaced in the pre-historic realm of the Trojan War. Second, the book switches from the first-person to third-person with no apparent reason; as a result, it's jarring and seems very gimmicky. Those two exceptions aside, the story of the end of the Trojan War continues to be riveting. As are the characters, the dialogue, the mise-en-scene, and so on. It's definitely a good read, but it's not great writing.

This is a strange one, as I admire the author’s earlier work and have read some great modern renditions of the classics recently (Circe, Burial at Thebes, Home Fire). This isn’t in their league. The style is surpassingly awkward, with endless hyphenated parentheticals interrupting the prose. Barker is apt to shift from first person singular to third person, then to first person plural in one sentence. The characters’ locutions are contemporary and common. And the narrator engages in a silly back and forth with the reader, who poses as interrogator. The theme that all history is male, and that women are enslaved by it, is not new, but perhaps especially appropriate now. But its presentation isn’t consistent or convincing. If it weren’t The Iliad, it wouldn’t be worth the read.

Great writing transcends time and place. I think it was Faulkner who, when asked why we read literature, said that we do it to be reminded of the internal truths of the human experience. Baker succeeds, drawing on Homer's Iliad, which some scholars have noted marks the beginning of Western literature. We all know the framework of the story: the Trojan War, a miscreant king, Agamemnon, and a demigod hero, Achilles. Homer sang of the wrath of Achilles, which of course involves a young woman, Briseis. Remarkable that no one seems to have ever written her story--until Baker, that is. We see the great war through her eyes after the invading Greeks destroy her town, slaughter her husband and brothers, and take her as a war prize, giving her to Achilles. Her story tells us much about suffering and survival, of honor and pain, but it also reminds asks us to think about the power of love. I don't mean romantic love, of course. Baker's aim is broader than that. Her description of King Priam pleading for the return of his son, for example, is heartbreaking. It is matched fully by Baker's touching description of Briseis' inner conflict, torn as she is between hating the enemy that changed her life forever but nevertheless finding it possible to forgive the man who made her a slave and then who did not.I hated reaching the final page, wishing that the book were longer, that the story would continue.

I have never read Pat Barker's other works but I will now. This is a beautifully written novel that brings alive the time of ancient Greece from the viewpoint of her main character. Really impressive. You won't regret your purchase.

The Raging Quiet, by Sherryl Jordan

Amazon.com Review

New Zealand author Sherryl Jordan has crafted a riveting story, reminiscent of the work of Thomas Hardy, that's shimmering with the romanticism of a fairy tale but told with the vivid detail and suspense of a modern novel. In an ancient time, a newlywed girl is taken to a seaside thatched cottage by her much older husband. His drunken lovemaking repels her, but Marnie must endure because he is the lord's middle son and she has married him to save her family from starvation. When he is killed in a fall, she feels more release than grief, in spite of the village rumors that she caused his death with a witch's curse. Suspicions grow when she befriends an outcast, a "mad" boy called Raver whose rages and yammerings look to villagers like the work of the devil. But Marnie realizes that the boy is deaf, and his bursts of anger come from his inability to communicate. With the help of the kindly and wise village priest, she begins to invent a sign language for him. A tender love grows between them in the cottage, but Marnie still fears the marriage bed. Meanwhile, the scandalized villagers spy on the "witch," and at last force her to endure the bloodcurdling ordeal of trial by hot iron. Readers will gobble up this entrancing story, and may want to move on to Cynthia Voigt's Jackaroo, Michael Cadnum's In a Dark Wood, and perhaps Thomas Hardy's Tess of the D'Urbervilles. (Ages 12 to 15) --Patty Campbell

From Publishers Weekly

Jordan (Winter of Fire) transports readers to a craggy seaside town for this sweeping story of a blossoming friendship between a young woman outsider and a young man whom the townsfolk deem mad. Marnie arrives in the village of Torcurra to live in a rundown and isolated cottage with her new husband, Isake Isherwood, the son of a nobleman. After a mere two days of marriage, Isake dies in a freak accident for which the villagers unfairly blame Marnie, whom they suspect is a witch. In this hostile environment the parish priest and an outcast boy Marnie dubs Raven are the young widow's only allies. She realizes that Raven is deaf rather thanAas the superstitious townsfolk believeApossessed by demons, and develops a sign language with which the two young people communicate (fueling suspicions of witchcraft). Jordan blends a zealous supporting cast with the flavor of Hawthorne with the societal forces of Hardy as she plays out Marnie's tortuous fate. A few elements may be familiar to adult readers (e.g., a mysterious hidden treasure), but Marnie's ordeal at the hands of witch-hunters and Raven's efforts to learn to communicate make for riveting reading. The land itself takes on a hypnotic presence, culminating in a primal dance on a Stonehenge-like stage. Even if readers see a few developments coming, the anticipation is pure pleasure. Ages 12-up. “It’s got nothing to do with devils! He can’t hear!”This is one of those books that sneaks up on you and honestly, I don’t understand why no one knows about this book! This is so underrated it’s criminal. It discusses what it means to be deaf, to look past each other’s differences and love them for them, and that no matter what happens, we can get stronger.Marnie marries Isake Isherwood, the son of the Lord her family is working the lands in exchange for food and a roof over their heads. Her mother and sisters cannot work and her brothers are too young, so she takes the reins. (And her mom is so ungrateful later on)Due to nasty rumors and constant abuse of authority, Isake must ask for her hand, and she quickly discovers he isn’t what she thought him to be. He lies about his lands, takes her to a dank cove where there is no bed, only straw, and he rapes her. It’s handled very well and is not tossed aside. When Isake dies in an accident, two older women overhear her distressed cries to the priest, Father Brannan, and rumors circulate about her murdering her husband. And brand her a witch.Add in a “mad boy” that latches onto her kindness, Father Brannan, a secret about what the house is worth, and you have yourself a very interesting story. Though short, it ties up all loose ends and left me satisfied with the outcome.I was in awe watching how Marnie came up with signs to communicate with Raven, who she realizes isn’t plagued by devils, but deaf. He’s been whipped, beaten, and mocked simply because he cannot speak and scares the villagers when he attempts to, for he cannot form words, merely sounds that sound “inhuman” to them.Marnie is afraid at first, but when she realizes what’s going on and how much he’s suffering, works to find a way to communicate with him, even when all seems impossible. All the characters were complex and each had their moments where I wanted to slap them-but they all made it out fine, thank goodness, because they also had plenty of moments where I sat there going LIVE please! Don’t die omg.I loved the romance. It bloomed naturally, it was so sweet, and was a stark contrast to everything Marnie endured in the beginning. The romance is honestly one of the strongest highlights.Highly recommended to all.

Bought this book two days ago and finished it in one night (granted, I stayed up till 6am, but I'm a night owl and started it around 3). As my favorite genre is mideval with a twist, I've got to say this is quite an amazing read. It starts off slow, but like most other reviews, it hooks you without you ever knowing at what part it did so. Interesting characters that are believable, though I would have liked more insight and devolopment, but that's coming from someone who reads series instead of novels most of the time. I'd very much recommend this to readers who are familiar with "Dragon's Bait" by Vivian Vande Velde.SPOILER~Y STUFF::One thing that would have been fun - if not a little cheesy - would be the fact that Raven ended up being the 'treasure' they were all looking for. If he ended up being the king's bastard-born son. Don't get me wrong, I really did like how it ended (her courage through the trial and the growth of their relationship is perfect and heartwretching) but I wish there was just one more good thing that happened to these characters that went through so much. But I guess that the lesson of the book was less of a 'be careful who you judge' and more of a 'don't put up with toxic people' morale. But, that might just be my mindset for strong leads after reading "A Court of Thorns and Roses" series right before this.

I read this for the first time when I was twelve. I sort of stumbled upon it at the bookstore, attracted more by the cover than anything else. The story is very lovely and gentle. It really touched me on a spiritual level, and it's a book I often find myself returning to. I don't want to spend a lot of time rehashing the plot, but I will say it's a story of struggle, ostracism, and the healing power of innocent love. I wish this book was available on kindle, as I have a degenerative eye disease that disables me from reading regular print books. To any parents who are concerned about the possible content of this story: there is a very brief, simple love scene and non-explicit mentions of sexual attraction between two characters. However, I will point out that, unlike many young adult books, it involves two people who are in love with each other and it plays an important role in the main character's struggle to allow herself to love physically.

I really enjoyed this book, nearly as much as Wolf Woman. Marnie's character is independent and fierce in what she believes in, despite what everyone else thinks of her. This is shown more and more as she takes Raven under wing and teaches him the ways of kindness he's never known before. Even with the whole village against them and being wrongfully accused of witchcraft, Marnie continues to fight for what she thinks is right, for herself and for Raven. The ending is bittersweet. Things worked out, but not in ways she planned and not perfectly. It makes the story that much more real, and ended on a hopeful note despite the loose ends. Sherryl Jordan leaves a few things to the imagination.

I absolutely loved this book! It was so life affirming to see such a diverse group of women showing support for one another. I too have been greatly inspired by Beyonce in ways that still surprise me. Though on the surface we do not have much in common, the pages of this book confirm why I have almost always taken Beyonce's work seriously, and by work I mean more than music. She is one of the artists that will only truly be appreciated when they are dead or retired, so it was a pleasant surprise to for this book to do such a wonderful job of capturing her work in real time. That the author and many of the contributors are fellow black women is a wonderful bonus.

This is a comprehensive, intelligent, diverse, and passionate look at a woman who's become an icon while managing in many ways to remain honest and real. The author has gathered an impressive group of scholars, influencers, and writers to comment on one of the most famous entertainers of our time. Well worth the read.

While I'm not a huge Beyonce fan, I did like reading about why other other people admire her so much. I think Beyonce is a beautiful and talented woman and I'm happy that she has inspired so many women. Being a woman of color, Beyonce inspires so many other women of color to be who they are and not be held down by society or a man. Beyonce shows women, through her music, that they have a voice! This book celebrates that through essays from a lot of different people and I think it's great.

I am a huge fan of the Billionaire Banker Series. Seduce me originally threw me for a loop because it is the first time in this series that doesn't feature Lana and Blake as the lead characters. I must be honest that when I first started this book that I was annoyed and frustrated by having Julie Sugar take center stage. She had only been a very miniscule character in the series and we hardly knew her. As if this wasn't a big enough drawback she came across as mean, petty, cruel, unkind, dishonest, a horrible person and if possible a worse friend. To be honest I wondered If I would be able to commit to finishing this book and at the start only my love for Lana and Blake and my interest in their story kept me going. Now, I will say that after all was said and done the character grew on me and by the end she had grown a lot and I actually could care about her. Vann was a great character and at the start much to good for Julie. In the end I think they made a good couple and was happy with their story. A very steamy romance.

I have mixed emotions about this book. I was enthralled with books 1 and 2. By the end of book 2, I couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen. I checked every week to see if the next book had been released. Then I read book 3, and I was thoroughly disappointed. I thought book 3 was a waste of time, and I still do. However, I was excited for book 4-- a chance at redemption, and then it is some new girl's POV!!!!! What the heck??? She's completely whacked! And what about El and Lana's vow to fight the darkness, and this grand love affair between Lana and Blake? I was 50% into the book, and I was ready to ask for a refund and give a scathing review of how the author had completely lost focus and lost me in the process.I kept trudging through because I try not to abandon a book, and by 58% I was captivated!! I had to keep reading. I had to find out what happened. In the end, I fell madly in love with the story line. I fell in love with Vann and Julie, and I am so glad I kept reading!PLEASE, Georgia Le Carre, give us a good ending!!!! Help us see all of these things be wrapped up. Help us have a sense of closure with your next book. There is too much left undone. Go back to Lana and Blake and finish their story, but keep us updated on Vann and Julie.

It didn't grab me like others, and at times I struggled to reach the end of the book, but that is not to say it isn't a good story. It is. I just go a little blank when I get an overload of information, and I feel the book gets off track too many times. I do however Love the Lana and Blake characters, I just am unsure how I feel about their story. Perhaps that is what the writer is aiming for?

This one was a tough read for me. I really didn’t like Sugar, I mean I just couldn’t find one redeeming quality. But, thank god i held in there till the end. God, the end made it all worth it. I could entirely see and understand her. Hell she felt like a part of me. And Vann, so yummy!! Love this family so much

I just finished reading Seduce Me and although it was a good read i didn't understand the whole "Julie" thing. She was never mentioned once in books 1-3 and i felt that the author just threw together this whole storyline. it also did not reveal what happened to Jack at the end.I would recommend it otherwise.

Ms. Le Carre is a talented storyteller. So was Margaret Mitchell when she wrote Gone With The Wind. The scene with Julie and Jack in the secluded room, being overheard by Vann? Oh, Ashley!Really loved Julie's character. She was well-developed, fleshed out, creepy and sympathetic. Vann, too, had that edge of creepiness that worked for him. And the depth of the depraved in this whole storyline, I'll say it again. Creepy. The love scenes are growing weary for me..."meat" as a term for a male's penis doesn't appeal to any of my romantic levels. And the flowery descriptors surrounding their sex is beginning to annoy me, too.Couple that with blatant electronic glitches and grammatical errors all over the place, and I'm growing tired of being jarred from the story. HIRE AN EDITOR!!! Heck, I'll do it for free!I hate to admit it, bit if her next book is like these last 4, I'll be...(gotta say it)...gone with the wind.

What a journey for Julie!! At the beginning I didn’t like her, but eventually she change the way of seeing things. Her story is one of learning to love yourself and forget judgments and society standards!!! Vann was a beautiful soul. I love him and knew who he was right away!! Can wait for more!!!

This book was by far one of the best I have read. It could have been fine as a stand alone, but it was much more. I loved the way Ms. LeCarre introduced Quinn in her other books and brought him to "life" in this one. I usually don't reread too many books I have previously purchased, but this one will definitely be on my list. Thank you Ms. LeCarre for being a wonderful artist.

This was a gift for a friend who took me to the play CHURCH BASEMENT LADIES! Yes, it is a recipe book which is sprinkled with quick anecdotes but the recipes reminded me of my Grandmother. She was one of the "real" Lutheran church basement ladies!Service was excellent!

I bought 2 books one older than this but they are the same book so it gets the same review as the other by the same name

Exactly the book I was looking for as a recovering Lutheran. These ladies existed all through my youth and this book evokes many memories for me. So glad to have it for myself.

Gave this as a gift to a co-worker that forever remembers her Luthern church dinners of her youth and it was very well received!

Third time I gave this as a gift. It arrived in excellent condition!

You don't have to be Lutheran to appreciate this book. It's well written and the recipes are great. Love the section on how to tie a perfect bow on your apron.

I expected the book to have stories similar to the stage plays about the church Basemant Ladies, but it is little more than recipes with stories about the recipes.

I knew if the book was anything like the play we saw my parishioner would love it. She is a shut-in and could not get out to see it.
